 | Paris Dining & Drinking Reviews | 21 - 30 of 76 | | Translated as "floating island", this dessert shows up on the menus of many Paris bistros. The standard version consists of a an "island" of fluffy eggwhites in a small pool of creamy custard. Sometimes caramel is added, or it is studded with other flavorings as in this version enjoyed at La Fontaine de Mars. Leave a Comment

I'm always disapointed to see foreigners order burgers, a pizza or something they're familiar with. I'm not asking you to order frog or sneils but once, I saw a couple of Americans order a crepe full of wheap cream... So, in your crepe I would recommend some lemon juice+sugar, marmalade, home made applesauce+cinamon or nutella and banana (my favorite). The price in Paris is around 3 and 4.50 euros for a crepe. Try not to sit in a cafe (they charge a lot more for a smokey place). Instead, take it to go and sit in a park (St Germain des pres behind the church, or on the Seine's docks) Bon Appetit!

It's happened to me personally and I've read alot of times it's happened to other Americans and other foreigners: We foreigners will be seated in one dining room apart from the French. I really don't know why this occurs, but could be the restaurant staff thinks we have more in common being non-French? I haven't had any problem with this custom in cafes, brasseries, and many restaurants, just certain ones. I won't generalize and say it happens all the time but it can and may happen to you. The French, it seems, are great for having a few morsels to eat and drink in their local park and taking their time over such delights. I stayed in the Latin Quarter which didn't appear to have many such places but I was surprised at the number of people taking up space in the many small parks. When I did a walking tour of the Marais I found a much larger spot for these activities at Place Des Vosges which had quite a few people sitting on the grass and enjoying some food while chatting. With the large number of bakeries and easy supply of wine, beer (if you prefer) and food at almost any dairy (7/11 or whatever you call it in your home town) it's easy to take part in this cultural icon. And I am still wondering why a chicken?? ------- Okay -- VTer mariev solved my question -- "Maybe I have an idea about the chicken in the shaker -- the french term for egg-nog is 'lait de poule', could it be ?.." I would suggest that if you are going to be spending a week or more in a location to try to go to a local brasserie on a regular basis. By doing this, you get to sit in with the locals, chime in with conversation and participate in a daily ritual. You could do it in the morning for your first coffee or in the afternoon for a kir - but do it. You get a better feeling for the pace of life and you'll hear about what issues the locals are concerned about. I did this when I stayed in the Marais, once, and also in the 15th arrond when I stayed at Aloha Hostel - worked fantastic. I got to practice French and learn from locals and even was given a free drink after a nice conversation with the bar man. Leave a Comment

As established Paris can be a bit pricey... Which is why the best way to save some money is to do as the French and make the most of Happy Hour. The French do as after-works is both a popular and common thing among the young if nothing else, and after work, it is happy hour! :) Happy Hour in Paris is not only one hour but is normally about three, depending on where you go. Cafe Oz by Les Halles have great cocktails for only €5 between 18h-20h, and around Bastille Happy Hour varies from 16h-21h, the most common one being about 19h-21h. And the cocktails are great, and defently worth €5!! Leave a Comment

French style is evident in this picture detail from a restaurant in the 7eme. It happens to be Le Florimund, but you will see this scene by peering in the restaurant windows in Paris. The flowers on the bench outside are a casual contrast to the neatly ordered table, white linens and sparkling glasses to the ready! . The link will give YOU the rules you need to host in the French style! Leave a Comment

Window-shopping in Paris, or as the French call it "lecher les vitrines" [literally "lick the windows"] is a rewarding pursuit -- the windows in Paris are as chic as the residents:) . I looked at this window in the 6th near St. Germain very quickly and couldn't understand why I was seeing "fur" -- then I looked carefully and voilà -- tiny goats among the beautiful little goat cheeses! . On my most recent trip I ran across these window displays also showing the French style and wit. Leave a Comment

This photo combines two local customs -- the blackboard menu and a good deal if you take your meal at the bar. All the choices look good! Leave a Comment
