Dining & Drinking: Fresh vegetables for a local restaurant *7e
  • Tip Rating:
  • I walked by this scene on the way to the metro one day. Sitting by the service entrance of this restaurant were these crates of fresh vegetables, waiting for the staff to arrive and take them in.

Dining & Drinking: Training the young gourmet ...
  • Tip Rating:
  • I was taken by the father talking to his young daughter at Chartier. Children are often seen in restaurants where they behave beautifully and demonstrate a high degree of sophistication about the meal in front of them.

for Epyphanie or for Mardi Gras, we eat cr?pes !
if you don't go to Bretagne eat real crepes made by bretons (you call it galette when it's salt paste, with sarazin flour), you can still try crepes in many places and sit in a park to eat them or go in crepes restaurants.
most famous is "la compl?te" : ham, cheese, egg
most loved by girls : "crepe au Nutella", my favorite too - and also crepe with sugar, simple - not the same as "crepe au chocolat"
(you can go in any french shop and buy a pot of Nutella (milk chocolate and nut paste) as a souvenir !!!) http://www.nutella.fr/
here is the recepie for crepes :

Dining & Drinking: "la note, s'il vous plait"
  • Tip Rating:
  • In simple restaurants the bill is often calculated on the paper topping the table. This is from our lunch at Chartier. As you can see we drank a bottle of wine from Bergerac and 2 people had the sauerkraut and sausage plate :)

Dining & Drinking: Mais Je Rêve! ;-)
  • Tip Rating:
  • OK, OK, this is definitely going to be my final-final-final tips. Learn them well, memorize them and your French waiter might even think he's serving a local. Mais je rêve? Try it.

    (1) At the dinner table, hands are placed on the table when you are NOT eating.

    (2) Bread should be broken, not cut. It is placed on the table, not the plate.

    (3) Place your knife and fork side by side across your plate when the meal is over.

    (4) Mineral water is frequently served at a meal.

    (5) Cheese is served at the end of the meal. Put the cheese on your plate and not directly onto the bread.

    (6) To request for the bill, make a writing gesture in the air. And not hiss or whistle.

    (a) If you just so happen to be in the Marais area and, it's strictly veggie you crave, then you must absolutely check out Theatro Picalo. The dining area's small... but the menu is very interesting and the ambiance is oh-so-charming.

Hot Tip: Don't leave this place without trying their French apple crumble. Simply Ooh-la-la!

Address of this much revered veggie place:
    6 rue des Ecouffes.

    (b) Nobody goes to Paris for pizza. (Pur-leeease). However, if you're just too tired to leave your hotel room, then it's 'hotel delivery' to the rescue! Pick up the phone and call: Pizza Hut (05.30.30.30) and within 30 minutes you'll have your meal. Minimum? None. Delivery charge? None. Credit cards? No. Cash and in Euros only please. Will they deliver wine and beer? Yes! Yes! Yes!

    (c) Batifol is a chain of local bistros that offers French food and pastries like your grandma used to make. ;-) Modest pricing with healthy portions and a great opportunity to rub shoulders with the locals. There are altogether 17 locations in Paris (I think... Excuse me if I've got my numbers wrong. I am after all a human being; not Miss Yellow Pages). My advice? Start with tea and some goodies at the Batifol in the mall off the Avenue des Champs Elysees. Chic (pronounced as 'sheek' and not chick). Should make for a delightful pause in your sightseeing sessions.

  • *The parisians dont drink cold water. Even their Pepsi is so warm. WHat can you do? I guess you just have to drink it!
*DO NOT TIP at restaurants as they already include a tip.

  • Tip Rating:
  • Not really a tip but just something we found unusual:
If you ordered a pizza in a restaurant, it was standard for it to have a fried egg in the middle!
Now how useful is that tip??!!!!

    Dining & Drinking: Breakfast
  • Tip Rating:
  • Get up early, have a coffee and a croissant in one of the many bars to see Paris awake.
Good hotels also offer French breakfast.

  • Tip Rating:
  • Cous-cous. Parisians go for a cous-cous much as Londoners go for a curry. You must try it at least once.
