  • Tip Rating:
  • What i noticed during my staying was that some parisians sometimes just ignore you if you try to talk in English with them ,though they understand you!But if you speak french they really appreciate that & become very friendly

  • Tip Rating:
  • Always greet them with bon jour( daytime) or bon soir (night time) and if you speak french you are golden, if not then good luck trying to communicate, on my first day there it took me a half hour to order a bottle of coke.
no need to tip but it usually makes me feel better about myself

Parlez vous francais?: Always try and speak a little French!
  • Tip Rating:
  • Be respectful and try speaking French to people before you use English. At first it can be so intimidating and nerveracking to try especially when you have heard that Parisians aren't friendly but it is sooooo worth the effort!

  • Tip Rating:
  • Make 'Parlez vous Anglais?' your motto! (If Enlish is your first language, of course.)
This might give you a shake of the head for an answer but at least it will be with a smile :-)

Parlez vous francais?: Most restaurants and cafes...
  • Tip Rating:
  • Most restaurants and cafes have the tip included. If the menu/ticket says: Gratuit compris, the tip has been added in. Everyone says 'Bonjour' during the day, then after 6 p.m., they say 'Bonsoir' which means 'Good evening.'
Try to speak a few words of French. Don't be the 'ugly American' who refuses to try. Many French people know some English, but if you try to speak their language, then the Parisians will warm up to you.
    'Parlez-vous anglais'--Do you speak English?

If all else fails, and you're in trouble, say 'Ou est la toilette?' Where is the toilet?

Take a phrase book along!!!! Another good book to take is Rick Steves' Paris. I took this book along, and it guided me around Paris, even through the Louvre and Musee d'Orsay. Good book!

Parlez vous francais?: Most tips I learned from our...
  • Tip Rating:
  • Most tips I learned from our tour guide, who was born and raised in Britain. However, she's been guiding for...I believe...20-some years. French people are a tad bit...nervous...about speaking English. So, if you're an American like me, try saying the few French words you do know, so they know that your French, no matter how bad their English may be, is worse than their attempts. It's just the way it is. And if you are nervous, realize that they are, too. Here are some starters for you:
    Hello Bonjour bohn-joor
    Goodbye Au revoir aw-rev-wa
    Please Sil vous plait see-voo-play
    thank you merci mair-see
    good evening bonsoir bon-swah
    yes oui wee
    no non non

If you just can't get yourself to speak a little French, a smile goes a long way. Smile, act nice, and have fun!

Parlez vous francais?: Use all the French you can. ...
  • Tip Rating:
  • Use all the French you can. Some Parisians, especially taxi drivers, hate it if you don't make an effort. One taxi driver said to me and my friends 'it's not so far by foot' ... about our hotel which was 2 hours away by foot! But to be fair, there is also a lot of friendly people who don't blame you for asking questions in English.

  • Tip Rating:
  • When in France or anywhere else try to bring a book for translating. Just butcher their language with a smile and they will appreciate it more than if you try to ram english down their throats.

  • Tip Rating:
  • I did try my pathetic few words of French on the locals and found it was not well received. I think upon my next trip, I will just ask if they speak English and go from there.
