 | Paris Parlez vous francais? Reviews | 51 - 60 of 114 | | The parisians and is it all french say monsieur and madame and mademoiselle ALL the time and it is just common courtesy, not formal as it would be in English. So its better to say s'il vous plait madame rather than just s'il vous plait. silly really as most people speak english anyway , to worry that is but it's nice to try! Oh yes and remember if you are a guy to swear a lot in French as that seems to be the kosher thing... Leave a Comment

Greetings are very important ! make sure you know some of French language - The basic ones like, Comment ca va?(How are you) merci (Thanks), au revoir (Bye2), bonne journee(have a nice day) or bonne soiree (have a nice evening). Not all French speak English. The French also have different habit of having their dinner, they usually have apperatif (drinks) and talk and talk and very late dinner.:-( (I nearly fainted onced when I followed my French friends, I was too hungry) Leave a Comment

French people prefer to speak french! You have to respect them - forget you style of living - you have to life there like French people - thats in restaurants and also everywhere else. If you can't speak French - don't worry - French people are nice if you try to life like them. Avoid to say in restaurant things like 'I don't know what to eat - I'm hungry I want to eat a lot - that's all' if you are asked what to eat. Ask what the waiter would recomand you - thats always a good choice! Leave a Comment

Generally I found that French women are so much nicer than men, from a backpacker's perspective. Know some simple French before you go. In many times I got lost in the metro maze and I found nobody who could use English to help me! Leave a Comment

Although you are in the capital city of France you will find that most people speak English, but please make the effort to speak French and they will realise you are not French and speak English willingly. Leave a Comment

Attempt to communicate in French at first (keyword is attempt) and usually it gets better results than charades and using english. Leave a Comment

The French are largely patriotic, so learning a little about their language and culture goes along way. It helps a lot if you can speak a little French. You don't need much. A simple Merci ( thanks) Au reviour ( bye ) and c'est combien ( what does it cost ) will do for starters. If want to impress them , add Monsieur or Madame with the merci or Au reviour. The extra bit of courtesy goes down really well. Please note it is not unusual for a sit down meal to last two hours or more. For the French, eating is a serious business, so sit back, watch the French and enjoy your meal. Leave a Comment

Is this a cultural tip or a warning/danger, you decide: Just don't get discouraged if you find very few people who speak English, us Americans are just as guilty when it comes to not knowing a 2nd language. Leave a Comment
