 | Paris Stereotypes: Rude, or friendly? Reviews | 31 - 40 of 77 | | I found people in Paris to be very friendly and helpful, not how many people i know would describe them....I think this may have something to do with the fact that we all tried to speak French - none of us were very good, and often the replies came back in English, but I think then locals appreciate it if you at least try to speak their language. The people we met were veery helpful and a smattering of bad French is enough for them to smile and guide you on where to go. Sunset is only around 9:45pm(in May/June) which was great for us to see more in the daylight Leave a Comment

Parisians have a reputation to be snotty. I don't find this true at all with the exception of the taxi drivers, but then they have one of the worst jobs in town (quickly realised when you see the traffic). The problem is that many English speakers don't even TRY a little bit of French. Just say 'bonjour' when you go into a shop and 'Parlez-vous anglais?' when you want to talk to someone and you will find that they are just as nice as the rest of us and often switch to English these days. Promise. Leave a Comment

One evening on the way back to my hotel I wanted to buy a bottle of wine. I went into one place and got screamed at and thrown out. I walked down the street a bit and tried again and got the same reaction. At the third place I tried, I walked in and got a big hug and a kiss on the cheek from the proprietor. It was a strange experience, but I finally got my bottle of wine. Leave a Comment

In North America there is a sterotype of the French for being rude and snobby. I totally disagree with this. As long as you put some effort into trying to speak French the people will be very helpful. No one should walk into their culture and assume that they speak English! Leave a Comment

People are so nice in Paris! When I tell Americans that, they are surprised. It *could* be because I can speak some French (albeit badly), but my attempts seemed to be appreciated and I was treated well wherever I went. On the other hand, I couldn't get over the amount of people presumably from the US or Canada who'd go over to Parisiens and demand loudly, 'do you speak English?' Why not try and learn a few basic phrases? French is one of the most beautiful languages and it is quite easy to learn a few basic phrases. Leave a Comment

Don't act like the nasty, rude American. I as an American of Latin background dont speak french but I tried a little and then I tried spanish and then I tried english. If they see that you at least try , the French will open up to you. I was never treated with arrogance or rude, infact the French where always friendly ,helpful and always had a smile when I needed help.. Leave a Comment

Parisiens being rude is a silly stereotype that shouldn't even be given a second thought. Most people will completely appreciate your efforts for speaking French. I found that whenever I spoke French to people, they would always detect my North American accent and would start speaking English to me anyways. I found it a bit odd, but hey, I didn't question them! Leave a Comment

So they all say that the French are rude and hate Americans. Well, this is only the case when the Americans are rude and show how much they hate the French. Learn the language. The French will appreciate your effort, but will switch to English. They prefer that to listening to their language being butchered. Leave a Comment
