Cemeteries & Other Resting Places: The Resting Place of Gertrude Stein

To be quite honest, and I do promise that I will read up on her, I know very little about Gertrude Stein. Had it not been for the catchy chorus by Idlewild, a Scottish Punk Band, who wrote the following lyrics in the song "Roseability": "Gertrude Stein says that's enough, I know that that's not enough now...." , I wouldn't even have recognized the importance of her contributions to literature.

Upon casual, superficial research, I see that she had connections to Picasso, Charlie Chaplin and even lived in Oakland, California prior to moving to Paris; she was Jewish and very lucky to have not seen a concentration camp during WW2.

Interestingly, her last words, prior to her death in 1945, just after WW2, were:

"What is the answer? ...without a reply, "In that case...what is the question?"

I hummed the song "Roseability" by Idlewild as I paid respects to her grave after long walk all the away across Père Lachaise.

I know many people think this is a strange place to visit but I consider it a "must see" activity.

It's amazing to be walking in these tunnels and thinking that they were built in Roman times. That my friends, was a very, very long time ago.

Around 1780, the cemetary at Les Halles was overflowing and causing health problems so the French decided to move many rotting corpses down below.

They keep odd hours so double check before going. Usually it's something like 2-4pm 3 days a week and slightly longer hours on the weekend.

We've been twice. Once when they opened and once when they were closing. By far it was better when they were closing. It seems that more people are waiting for them to open thinking they'll beat the lines. That doesn't happen usually because they don't open until 2pm. Everyone is up by then!

We had the best luck going at 3:45pm and practically had the place to ourselves during mid September.

Cemeteries & Other Resting Places: Go downstairs to visit the dead!
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Catacombs in Montparnasse are a great way to pass an hour or two. Descend into 1.7km of tunnels lined by bones, where skulls stare at you from every angle. Not for the easily spooked!

Cemeteries & Other Resting Places: Cimetiere de Passy
  • Tip Rating:
  • This is small cemetary is located near the Eiffel tower, which you can see from almost every part of it's 2.5 acres. Manet and Debussy were both laid to rest here. The tomb and striking sculptures are worth a quick visit.

Cemeteries & Other Resting Places: Monsieur Noir's Stuff
  • Tip Rating:
  • Although Paris' Cimetiere du Pere Lachaise is home to over 800,000 individuals, some of them have better stories (or at least more published,) than others. My recommendation is if you're headed to Pere Lachaise to see Jim Morrison or maybe Oscar Wilde, then make sure to stop by Victor Noir's grave - I promise it's worth a good giggle.

Victor Noir, pseudonym of Yvan Salman was shot and killed by Pierre Bonaparte, great-nephew of Napoleon at the tender age of 22. You can find his bronze effigy in Division 92.

Story has it that a woman who strokes the amply filled crotch of Monsieur Noir's will quickly become pregnant.

Scandal came when to many future mothers were rubbing a bit to enthusiastically, and the larger than life sized package was being worn down. Although a fence was put up a few years ago, it's removed now, so feel free to have a stroke...and a good giggle.

Hours for the cemetery are: 8am-6pm Monday-Friday, 8:30am-6pm Saturday, 9am-6pm Sunday (Mid-March-Early November;) and 8am-5:30pm Monday-Friday, 8:30am-5:30pm Saturday, 9am-5:30pm Sunday (Early November-Mid-March.) Entrance is free.

Cemeteries & Other Resting Places: Cimetiere du Pere Lachaise
  • Tip Rating:
  • You might think it's strange to visit a cemetery, but Pere Lachaise is a fascinating place.
It's a place of pilgrimage to many a fan of the Doors as Jim Morrison is buried here. Jim died under mysterious circumstances in Paris in 1972.
Other famous people buried here are Edith Piaf, Oscar Wilde, Moliere, Sarah Bernhardt, Simone Signoret and Yves Montand. The Columbarium contains the remains of Isadora Duncan.

Cemeteries & Other Resting Places: Pere Lechaise cemetery
  • Tip Rating:
  • Visit Pere Lechaise, a sprawling, uniquely European cemetery. It is a fascinating site. The cemetery is cluttered with thousands of monuments, each of them a unique tribute to the deceased. Many, many famous writers, composers and musicians are buried there. To name a few: Berlioz, Oscar Wilde, Jim Morrison, and Chopin. Pere Lechaise is very interesting. It would be so even if famous people weren't buried there. Stop by and have a look-see. It's free!

Cemeteries & Other Resting Places: Père Lachaise is a cemetery...
  • Tip Rating:
  • Père Lachaise is a cemetery located in the eastern part of Paris. This is where a lot of famous people are buried, such as Jimi Hendrix, Balzac, Oscar Wild...

It can be quite a fascinating cemetery. It might be odd to say it but walking in this cemetery by a nice day is quite pleasant.

You can buy a map at the entrance of the cemetery for 1,50 euros. You will find more easily the tombs of famous artists, writers, scientists...

Metro : Père Lachaise (line 3)

The peaceful Montparnasse cemetery is the resting place of many famous French men and women as well as some noted foreigners who made Paris their home. You can pick up a map at the entrance which points out the graves of Samuel Beckett, Baudelaire, Jean-Paul Sartre, Simone de Baeuvioir and Man Ray among others.

In the center of the cemetery is Horace Daillion's "Le Génie du Sommeil Eternel" (The Spirit of Eternal Sleep) which was donated to the city in 1902 by the artist.

The cemetery is open daily and is located off the Boulevard Edgar-Quinet in the shadows of the Tour Montparnasse.
