Cemeteries & Other Resting Places: I agree with AnastasiaR on...
  • Tip Rating:
  • I agree with AnastasiaR on this one...visit the Pont de l'Alma, the site of the crash that killed Princess Diana. Although located in the midst of the hustle and bustle of Paris, it seems eerily quiet as you read the graffiti messages left for Diana and Dodi.

This is the shrine above where we all lost Princess Di. Sorry it was dusk and not a bright picture.

The Eifel Tower is in the background.

Cemeteries & Other Resting Places: Pere LaChase cemetery,...
  • Tip Rating:
  • Pere LaChase cemetery, somewhat on the outskirts of Paris. Take the subway to the Pere LaChase stop, the cemetery is within walking distance. Closing time is early, around five or six, so give yourself enough time to see everything. There are many famous people buried here such as Oscar Wilde, Chopin, Jean-Baptiste Moliere, and Jim Morrison (whom I believe is slated to be moved out at some point in the future.)

  • Cimitiere de Montmartre, eternal home of Francois Truffaut. This cemetery is a cool shady haven near Place Clichy, so give it a wander.

Cemeteries & Other Resting Places: The Catacombs at Denfert...
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Catacombs at Denfert Rochereau.
If you've read any of my other pages, you probably know by now that I have some morbid tendencies :) If you do too, you cannot miss going to see the piles of bones and skulls in the catacombs. Is there no end to the gothic experience in Paris? Here you walk *down* a bunch of stairs to the belly of the beautiful beast that is Paris and walk in very dark, narrow corridors for about 1/2 a mile (all the while wondering, 'is this it? Where are the bones I've heard about?') and then you're *there*. You'll know because there will be an archway and words...including 'Morts' in the mix.
Then you will walk in a series of long passage ways, dark, and dripping with condensation, the bones piled up to the top, some in interesting configurations, giving me the idea that Parisiens have a lovely sick sense of humor, and little sayings by French writers. A fabulous comedia dell sangue--lush and spine-tingling at once!!

By the way, a great deal of these remains are from those who were in the Resistance.

I kept thinking when MY lease is up at the boneyard, can my bones be sent to the catacombs in Paris?
    Nope. No longer happens.

    Pere Lachaise cemitery.
The old known necropolis with beautiful statues and luxury monuments, especially of rich armenians who died in XIX century. Many famous people are burried there, among them : Frederic Chopin, Yves Montand, Edith Piaf, Simone Signoret and many others.
