Parks, Gardens, and Squares: Place saint Georges

  • Located between Opera and Pigalle, the place Saint Georges is completly unknown by the tourists.
Though, it is a charming round place with a fountain and the Gavarni's bust (a sculptor famous for his "Lorettes" = prostitutes).
Around the place, the Thiers House destroyed by the Commune in 1871 and rebuilt by his wife's family, an actors school and the antique shop you see on the picture.
    For romanticism amateurs.
The Musee de la Vie Romantique is nearby (12 rue de Chaptal a free museum).

Parks, Gardens, and Squares: Square des Batignolles
  • Tip Rating:
  • It is not a very big spot in Paris, but I have lived next to Square des Batignolles, and I can tell you that it's a pleasure walking inside and around it. If you have some time to spend in the early morning and you want to have a good breakfast, go to the bakery at the corner of Rue des Batignolles and Rue des Moines, behind the Square (the bakery is in front of a church) : you can have your breakfast inside (very scarce !) and enjoy very tasty "pains au chocolat" or "croissants"... Subway : Brochant, then go up the rue Brochant until the park..

Parks, Gardens, and Squares: Vive la Revolution!
  • Tip Rating:
  • This is another reiminder of the close ties between France and the US particularly around the time of the Revolutionary War. Layfayette was something of a hero in America and here he is with Washington as done by none other than August Bartholdi. I am always surprised to find that most Americans do not recognize Bartholdi's name - he did the Statue of Liberty(with help on the interior structure from a fellow named Eiffel). There are several minatures of it around Paris including one not far from here. I haven't gotten there yet, but next trip. This is in the Place des Etats Unis.

Parks, Gardens, and Squares: Chess in the Luxembourg Gardens

  • Is anyone here interested in chess? It's a top European sport if not a very popular one in the US. Well, if you are interested, Paris boasts a local chess community that meets in the Luxembourg Gardens daily. It's no surprise really that chess is popular in Paris as the FIDE (Federation Internationale des Echecs) or the world chess federation is headquartered in France.

It's not too easy to find the chess players' venue in the Luxembourg Gardens unless you know it beforehand. Even the gendarme did not know where it was and had to ask his colleagues in the park when I asked!

As the garden is huge the easiest way to find the chess players is to take the rue de Vaugirard entrance which is near to the tennis courts and children's playground. Just across the tennis courts and under the trees you'll see these young and old men sitting on the green metal chairs, chessboards propped up on another chair in between them. Shh, don't be noisy because it's not nice to create noise when they are thinking of some highly intricate strategy to out the other guy. If it rains the chess games go on but they are under played an awning.

If you are a chess enthusiast, don't hesitate to join a game if it's possible. If you speak French, you can ask the players or just motion to them that you want to join. When a game is finished, another opponent takes a turn playing against the winner of the previous game. You don't need to speak French to know chess. All you need to know is how to play as chess strategies and theories are universal.

Parks, Gardens, and Squares: Go sailing in the middle of Paris!
  • Tip Rating:
  • One of our favorite spots is just a short walk from the entrance to Le Louvre, in the Tuilleries gardens. It is a large pool where you can rent sailboats, take in a lot of people watching, and if the stomach is growling, snack food is nearby. A favorite of the locals, but usually a quick walk-by for the tourists. We have spent hours here.

Parks, Gardens, and Squares: The oldest tree in Paris
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Church of Sainte-Julien-le-Pauvre (Saint Julien the Poor) sits on the Left Bank of the Seine in the Latin Quarter, just across the river from Notre Dame. Next to the church, a rather ordinary-looking living tree has had its hollow trunk filled with concrete and its branches supported by concrete posts. It is a false acacia (called Robinier or Robinia Pseudoacacia). The plant was brought from Virginia to Europe in 1601 and planted there by Jean Robin, herbalist to King Henri IV of France and director of the nearby Jardin des Plantes. He was the first to describe the plant and memorialized in its Linnaean name. It is the oldest tree in Paris. The vacant area north of the Sainte-Julien church was turned into a little park, the Square René Viviani, which opened to the public in 1928. There is an interesting fountain is in middle of the square.

  • Jardin and Musée du Luxembourg - Paris

This park has certainly been the favorite one of parisians for some time now. It consists of 29 hectares of greenery with ornamental ponds and splendid trees. A true french-style garden. The park has a lot of metal chairs so you can spend a few hours relaxing with a book. Or you can also jog or play tennis, or just stroll around, and if hungry, visit the café to grab a bite.
There's also a museum, with art exhibitions by Raphael, Mondigliani and Botticelli. But do ask, as the exhibitions change every time
The park is beautiful, but then again, it's just a park. So if you've got absoultely nothing else to see, you can give it a try. Otherwise, skip it.

Parks, Gardens, and Squares: Du Vert Galant Square
  • Tip Rating:
  • Square du Vert Galant is on the western cape of Site island. This square is one of the most beautiful in Paris. Its name is translated as "the true lover". Henry IV has such a name, because he was known with his love affairs. His statue is beside the square.

Parks, Gardens, and Squares: Jardin du Luxembourg
  • Tip Rating:
  • Located in the 6th Arrondissement, everyone can enjoy the Jardin du Luxembourg. There are places to sit and read, to stretch out in the sun, a playground for the children, a place to play boules, and lots of paths to walk. It is one of the most peaceful places to spend a quiet sunny afternoon. It is well worth the visit.

The address is boulevard Saint-Michel, 75006.

If you take the Metro, get off at the Odéon stop. If you go by the RER B, descend at the Luxembourg stop.

It is opened everyday all year. In the summer the hours are from 7 in the morning to one hour before the sunset and in the winter it opens at 8 a.m.

    There is no entrance fee.

  • The Parc is located along the Seine, on the Left Bank, between the Pont du Garigliano and the Pont Mirabeau, 15e arrondissement (metro : Balard or Blvd Victor).

It is completly unknown by tourists mainly because it is new.

A modern and pleasant parc in which we go walking from time to time. The children like to play with the fountains.

The Balloon Fortis (now Eutelstat) works here.
