 | Paris Parks, Gardens, and Squares Reviews | 31 - 40 of 175 | | The Luxembourg palace was constructed by Maria Medici after death of her husband Henry the Fourth. She could not get used to an atmosphere of the Louvre and replaced it with an atmosphere of native Florence which she recreated in a palace and in a garden.

This is the little garden in the small square called Square Viviani behind the church, which you can see in the background. One of our happiest memories is of a concert we attended in the simple, Romanesque church. If you turn around you will see Notre Dame on the other side of the Seine! Leave a Comment

In the centre of Paris is a park that only few tourists know the history, or even the name of it. Funny thing is that almost all tourists that come to Paris, do visit this park. The name of this park is Champs de Mars, lying directly behind the famous Eiffel Tower. It’s 1000 metres long and 220 metres wide, and has a huge lawn in the middle of it. From this lawn, you have a stunning view of the tower. You can just lie in the grass to watch it, or have a pick nick or a sunbath. Especially when the weather is good, it’s really nice to be here. At the right side of the park, seen from the Eiffel Tower, there is another, typically French part of the park. A playground for the kids, benches for the old people and beautiful trees for the lovebirds. At the end of the park, you’ll find the Ecole Militaire, the Military School. The park originally belonged to this school as trainings ground for the soldiers. This is what gave the park its name: Champs de Mars. Mars is the ancient Greek god of War. In the 19th century the park got a totally different purpose: an exposition area. There were five world expositions held here, of which the 1889 one became the most famous, because that was the one where the Eiffel Tower was built for. In the end of the park, right in front of the Ecole Militaire, you’ll find a very modern monument, memorising the importance of peace. It shows the word Peace in all languages you can think of. Vrede, Peace, Pace, Frieden, Paix, etc… It´s a nice and photogenic monument. Leave a Comment

One beautiful park worth visiting is "Parc des Buttes Chaumont " Parc des Buttes-Chaumont is actually very popular and not "off the beaten path" but it is a little outside Paris central in 19th Arr and takes a little while to get to. But it's worth the trip. Very scenic and "hilly" up-down walking landscape, and the view from the hilltop gazebo of the Sacre Coeur and other parts of Paris is a knockout. Another one of its features is the infamous Paris "suicide bridge." NOTE: a time saver - Parc des Buttes Chaumont is quite large. On your first visit it would be tempting & seem logical to take the metro to stop "Buttes Chaumont." But if you're a "type A" cut-to-the-chase person who just wants to see the best part of the park or if your time is limited, take instead ligne 5 to Metro stop Laumiere and walk south down Ave de Laumiere to the north entrance to the park on rue Manin, across the street from the lovely & photogenic Pl Armand Carrel. It will save you much time & walking. But the whole park is beautiful and worth half a day if you have time. A little article is at the link below: Jack-Travel on ButteChaumont but there's lots of pictures and articles on the 'net about this beautiful place. Anthony has some great pictures of the park at his website Anthonys Home Page on page 6 of his Paris photos. Park can be found at Rues Botzaris, Manin 19th Arr Metro: Buttes-Chaumont Leave a Comment

Viaduct des Arts! Some people say it has been there for quite a while now, but somehow I never noticed it! Starting from the Bastille area there are signs leading you to the Viaduct des Arts, and there's a marvellous garden path up on the former viaduct for a railway leading from Bastille to some Porte de V. The roses really do smell, and it's quite relaxing up there. If you're in the mood for something more commercial there are small businesses down in the viaducts arcades - out of the ordinary! Display of handycraft and artwork of the special kind. Leave a Comment Other Contact: Metro: Bastille/follow the signs

This park, at the border of the 15th and 16th district, is a plain area of grass, nice to rest during summer with two small greenhouses and water flowing everywhere... It's situated at the subway station "Javel-Andre Citroen" (line 10 or RER C in direction of Versailles). Leave a Comment

At the request of Napoleon III, Haussmann built this surprising park in 1867 in a “non-touristy” section of Paris. There is a striking butte, a lake, grottos, a waterfall, and a bridge named “Suicide Bridge.” The park, located in the 19th arrondissement, is bordered by rue Manin, rue de Crimée, and rue de Botzaris. The closest Metro is Buttes-Chaumont / Botzaris (with an entrance in the Art Nouveau style of Guimard). It is a great place to stroll, relax, and watch French families enjoying life. Leave a Comment

Paris has a remarkable series of parks. This one, Parc Monceau, has a number of entrances: 78, bd de Courcelles, avenue Velasquez, avenue Van Dycq, and avenue Ruysdaël , in the 8th. This park is not far from the Champs Elysees and the Arc de Triomphe. Like many French parks, there are a series of "folies" or artificial ruins, designed to charm the eye and the soul. This park is used frequently by runners; you will see men and women circling the perimeter in sports shorts, tee shirts, and running shoes. (The only time you will EVER see the French wearing running shoes is when they are running! If you see someone walking the streets in running shoes, you can bet safely that they are not French). Place de Catalogne lies in the quarter of Montparnasse, very close to the Gare Montparnasse (Montparnasse railway station) and to the Tour Maine-Montparnasse. The traffic over the square is heavy, however the modern elegance of the buildings all around, as well as the park not far from it, make Place de Catalogne a worth seeing place. Moreover, this square owns a hidden jewel that even many Parisians don't know... Leave a Comment

Another impressive work by Bartholdi, the sculptor responsible for "Liberty Enlightening the World" (a.k.a. the Statue of Liberty). This bronze lion is actually a smaller copy of a work Bartholdi created for the town of Belfort, about 500 km from Paris. The lion's back is turned towards Germany to celebrate a French victory over the Germans in 1871. You will find this recently-restored work at Place Denfert-Rocherau, close to the entrance of the catacombs. Métro: Denfert-Rochereau Leave a Comment
