In the summer you would be hard put to see the grass for the people lolling on it. In the autumn the rustling leaves provide an aura of chill and remoteness worthy of a square whose beginnings date to 1604.
    .
Travelling to Paris in late autumn can be very rewarding -- for the quiet and the chance to see locations such as this with their "bones" showing as it were ...

This castel have been used by many kings of France.

The palace, of Italian inspiration, combines Renaissance and French artistic traditions.

We took this stroll on our way to Musée Nissim Camondo. You will find all sorts of follies and sculptures in the park, which was originally founded by the Duke of Chartres in 1769!
    .
The south side of the park backs up on magnificent mansions including Musée Nissim Camondo . The city acquired the park in 1860 with about half of the original acreage.

One of the loveliest, quietest spots in Paris is le Square du Vert Galant, located at the Western end of Ile De La Cite. Vert Galant translates as "hearty gallant" and is a reference to Henri IV, well known for his love affairs. On a warm summers day this is a nice place to read or to have lunch or to just sit and watch the boats go by on the river.

Not one of Paris's better known parks, but certainly one of it's most beautiful, Parc des Buttes Chaumonts provides much needed green space in the rather dreary 19th arrondissement.

Built on the site of a quarry in the 19th Century there's much to see in the park including a lake, high cliffs, a lookout tower and a waterfall. There is also a small bridge known as the "Pont des Suicides" which gained notoriety in the 19th century when rejected lovers used to throw themselves from the bridge.

Parks, Gardens, and Squares: Around Place Maubert
  • Tip Rating:
  • After dinner one night this past trop, I took the Metro to Place Maubert so that I could see one of my favorite squares in Paris, Square Restif de la Bretonne, where my favorite hotel in Paris sits, Hotel les Degres de Notre Dame. Thirza Vallois, in her inimitable guide Around & About Paris - Volume 1 describes this area as such:
Ahead is the triangular, tree-planted Place Frederic Sauton, at the junction of rue de la Bucherie, rue des Grands-Degres, rue Frederic Sauton and rue du Haut-Pave overlooking Notre Dame - a charming spot where you can stop for a drink or a bite.

If you look at the photo of La Maison on the square, this is one of the sites in the 1995 movie, Sabrina, which in my humble opinion has some of the best Paris scenes in a movie. If you look closely during the scene where Sabrina sits at the cafe with the photographer in the background you can see my favorite hotel.

The first photo is of the rue Frederic-Sauton taken from Place Maubert where a floating food market is held Tuesday, Thursday & Saturday mornings. In another photo, you see the Square Restif de la Bretonne looking down rue de la Bucherie which leads directly to Shakespeare & Co, while in the photo of the hotel you see Notre Dame looming over all.

At 2 rue du Haut Pave you'll find a lovely tapisserie (tapestry) shop, Tapisserie de la Bucherie, noted for its lovely blue facade.

Parks, Gardens, and Squares: The Bois de Boulogne was...
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Bois de Boulogne was founded by Louis XIV. The park in the west of the city received its current flair from Napoléon who wanted to shape the park after London‘s Hyde Park. Since my employer, the OECD, was located just next to the park, I went jogging here during lunch breaks or after work. You can also cycle or even horse ride in this park.

Métro: Sablons, Porte Maillot, Porte Dauphine, Porte d'Auteuil

Parc des Buttes Chaumont, not as famous as other parks in Paris, but equally beautiful. You can see some more at the travelogue.

Parks, Gardens, and Squares: an oasis to beat all oases!
  • Tip Rating:
  • Paris can become very warm and steamy in summertime. If you are out and about on such a day, find yourself in any of her parks for a cooling break by a fountain and some trees. My friend and I discovered the tranquil Place des Vosges during one of our Parisian strolls in June'02.
