Parks, Gardens, and Squares: Echelles du baroque (2003)
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Echelles du baroque are a block of 272 flats built by Ricardo Bofill in 1983. They lie between place de Catalogne and rue du Château and are all covered with mirror glasses.

Parks, Gardens, and Squares: Hôtel de Sens
  • Tip Rating:
  • Close to the Pont Marie, from Le Marais to Ile St-Louis, you will find the nice building called Hôtel de Sens. This building used to be the house of the archbishop of Sens, who ruled of the region before Paris got its own bishop.

It was built between 1475 and 1507 and is one of the oldest houses in Paris that always had people living in it. First several archbishops lived in it, and later in 1911 Queen Margot moved in after she was divorced of her husband Henri IV. Today the Library of Forney is based in the Hotel de Sens. The gardens around the palace are very nice. Typically French design with symmetry and a lot of straight lines.

As we walked westward from the Jardin des Plantes on the Quai St. Bernard along the Seine, we came to a desolate strech of carefully designed concrete in the form of a plaza extending to the river edge like a boat-landing. In the area were a number of modern sculptures. There were no signs or labels (which is characteristic of such "gardens"). I subsequently learned that it is also called the Tino Rossi garden, but I do not know who he was). The stiff metal creations looked as sterile as their setting (somebody keeps it clean). The only vigoruos structure was a small stone "toadstool" covered with graffiti (undoubtedly placed by a second hand). The views from the landing of the Ile St. Louis and the Seine were an extra dividend. My guidebook said we were to see (and maybe we photoed them) a Zadkine "Development of Form" and Schoffer's "Chronos 10". Please advise.

Parks, Gardens, and Squares: Ist - Place Dauphine
  • Tip Rating:
  • A still square next to the Palais de Justice. It is surrounded by loads of buildings whose even front can be seen from the other bank of the river, La Seine...
Metro St Michel is the closest.

Have you noticed that, in each parisian park where an artificial lake was set up, there are ducks around ??

Avez-vous remarque que, dans chaque parc parisien dans lequel on a mis un lac artificiel, il y avait des canards dans le coin ?

  • Today, the garden is a walk obliged for all tourists, who wish to admire the Tower Eiffel under the best angle. It is as remarkable for its famous fountain of Warsaw (1937). A set of basins in cascade dominates a big basin of which the 20 cannons to waters reject 8 240m3 of water per hour and forms fifty-six sheaves that finish their race in eight stairs of water!

The big waters of the central basin are enhanced by a game of light that enlivens every evening the statuaries to head of bull and horses gilt. A spectacle to not to miss!
The gardens are punctuated of a multitude of sculptures, of which some date of years 1930, as the " Man " of Crossbar and the " Woman " of Bacqué, who overhang the basins. They became the familiar models of the pupils of the schools of art of the Capital.
The most aware will recognize the two gardens to the English that spread out on all sides of the Palais de Chaillot. A small artificial river follows their chaotic drawing and cross to the detour of its race, beeches, chestnut trees, limes, as well as a red oak, a stalked oak, a hazel of Byzantium ...mais also a ptérocarya fraxinifolia planted in 1891, that reaches the 28m of top and 6,30m of circumference.

This abounding vegetation comes down below up against a row disciplined of paulownias, that marks the entry in the mineral and aquatic universe of the fountains of Warsaw. You will find curious vestiges there also: a sky light of the city hall of the XVIth century and a part of the facade of the Palais des Tuileries.
The aquarium of the Trocadéro is under renovation; its reopening is foreseen in 2005.

Here is a pic of the "suicide bridge" in Buttes-Chaumont park.

It has earned its nickname with its infamous history.

Parks, Gardens, and Squares: Square Louvais ...
  • Tip Rating:
  • Tucked down small streets just south of the Opera, you won't get here unless you intend to. We were there because a good friend lives in one of the buildings bordering the square.

Parks, Gardens, and Squares: Parc Monceau is a Hidden Gem
  • Tip Rating:
  • While spending a week in Paris, I lived in a rented flat near the Park Monceau (Metro Stop: Monceau.) I was surprised that not many people knew about this location - it's beautiful!! Home to runners and walkers in the morning and school children in the afternoon, it's simply a fantastic place to rest and relax.

I spent several mornings eating my breakfast on a bench in the park simply staring at the great statuary and landscaping.

Parks, Gardens, and Squares: Quintessential Marais square
  • Tip Rating:
  • Marché Ste-Catherine is an OTBP square about a block west of Place des Vosges. Filled with restaurants/cafes, a magic club, a hotel, some boutiques and a hotel yet maintains a very quiet, neighborhood-y atmosphere. (Metro: St-Paul)
