 | Paris Versailles Reviews | 51 - 60 of 80 | | Versailles - Yes, it's also a must see, but it's off the beaten track, north-west of Paris. History buffs and romantics will love this attraction equally. The building's famous for the Treaty of Versailles, the Hall of Mirrors, gorgeous never-ending gardens, living quarters of French royalty, among others. www.chateauversailles.fr for more info. Le Palais de Versailles I don't think a typical traveler would miss it when traveling to Paris. But it is far out of the way. This is the king's home outside of Paris. Walk the grounds, the gardens (if you are lucky or well informed you might catch the fountain spectacle), the palace itself is beautiful but pricy to visit (you know if that stuff interest you enough), etc... Plan to spend the day. To get there : Taking the RER is the only way to go. You avoid parking charges and won't get lost! Review my Versailles travelogues for the fountains. Leave a Comment

Versailles – a must see. The enormous Château de Versailles was built in the mid-17th century during the reign of Louis XIV (the Sun King). Among the advantages of Vesailles was its distance from the political intrigues of Paris; out here, it was much easier for the king to contain and keep an eye on his scheming nobles. The plan worked brilliantly, all the more so because court life turned the nobles into sycophantic courtiers who expended most of their energy vying for royal favour. This chateau essentially consists of four parts: the main palace building, which is a classical structure with innumerable wings, sumptuous bedchambers and grand halls; the vast 17th century gardens, laid out in the formal French style; and two out-palaces, the late 17th century Grand Trianon and the mid-18th century Petit Trianon. The main street of the city of Versailles has nice shops, beautiful bakeries and a market with good food. Lots of locals, very few tourists around here. Take the Neptune fountain exit and follow the street to the market. Leave a Comment

Versailles is a neat place. It's not only historical, but it can also be a fun place to spend time with those you're with. I would suggest that this be one of the first places you visit in Paris. This was the first place I went to in Europe, and there were people from all over the world, all speaking different languages. It was a neat feeling to know that Versailles was a place that all of these different people wanted to experience along with me! Versailles contains 700 rooms- wow! I mean, who would need that many rooms? Even a King doesn't need that many rooms! Well, you probably won't get to all of them, especially if there's a crowd. It's easy to get caught in a "human traffic jam", so just enjoy the room you're stuck in at the time. My favorite part were the outside gardens, which were huge! There are fish in the pond, so watch for them to jump out! You can also take a ride in a boat on the pond. Get to Versailles, even if just to a couple of rooms and a part of the gardens. Pick up some brochures (which come in a variety of languages) to learn the history behind the amazing Versailles. You have to experience it for yourself!

Versailles is not accessible via the metro, so you must take an actual train to get there. I think the journey is around 40 minutes to an hour, and it is a few blocks walk to the actual palace gates. I found Versailles (its appearence, the grounds) overwhelming due to its sheer size. The inside tour isnt much, and I was constantly trying to find my way around various tour groups of different nationalities. Indeed, with so many tour groups, it was hard to see any of the rooms or take any pictures. The grounds are well worth the visit. You could walk for hours in the gardens (if they are open) and around the fountains. Also on the grounds (and a fair distances walk) are the Grand Trianon, the Petit Trianon, and the Hamlet of Marie Antoinette.
