 | Paris Walking Around Reviews | 41 - 50 of 101 | | 110 rue du Bac, 7th arrondissement From 1892 to 1895, this was the home of James McNeil Whistler, American artist, most famous for his Arrangement in Grey and Black: Portrait of the Painter's Mother, popularly known as Whistler's Mother. He inspired many expatriate artists of the 1920s especially Ezra Pound, American poet, who wrote: You also, our first great, Had tried all ways; Tested and pried and worked in many fashions, And this much gives me heart to play the game. You may read more about this in Expatriate Paris: A Cultural & Literary Guide to Paris of the 1920s. Whistler's home lies not too far from the Bon Marche. Photo: Feb 2006 Leave a Comment

One of the narrowest streets in Paris is called ‘Street of fishing cat’. It’s not very long and leads you to the bank of Seine. So if you aren’t so thin, better not try going there :). Also near here there is a restaurant with the same name. Leave a Comment

A gem in the St Germain de Pres garden that is easily missed is the Sevres Fountain. It is more a wall produced by the famous Sevres factory. If you look carefully at the first photo you will see these young potters at work. This is an old tradition, including a glimpse of the artist/craftsperson in the work itself. Leave a Comment

At the corner of the Rue de Lepic and the Rue des Trois Frères, just west from the Sacre Coeur, you can see the fruit and vegetable stall that is featured in the famous movie "Les Fabuleus Destin d'Amélie Poulain". This is the stall where the grumpy grocer monsieur Collignon snarls at his assistant Lucien every day. In real life the shop, called Au Marché de la Butte, looks almost just as charming as in the film, but too bad all the "Amélie" posters around it spoil the looks a little bit. With some thinking about positioning I was able to take this -unpolluted- picture. Inside they don't only sell fruit and vegetables. You can also buy the posters they show outside. Leave a Comment

The crepes that are sold on those little stands by the street are the best! Specially after a day walking around the city. It is funny because usually the people who sell them do not speak much english, so it is a great way to try to speak some french.. but they are pretty nice so there should be no problem.

Bistro's/restaurants in Paris, always an experience. The typical "Paris styled" servants. The expensive tourist menu cards.. the expensive non local beers.. my tip : beter ask for a local bottle of french wine and enjoy the atmosphere, the way of life in Paris :" Aprés nous: le deluge" BTW : many bistro's are closed on police order at 2am Leave a Comment

The thing with European cities is that all buildings must touch another (at least 2) building on at least 2 sides :) Canadians seem to have no clue about that leaving endless wide spaces around every tiny house. But back in Europe there's always a sense of togetherness :) It's quite comforting so see. I guess this was another cultural shock for me - when I came to Toronto - that there's such wide open spaces, even in the middle of the city. The European Urban space is tight together, buildings completely cramped into narrow streets and then the gloomy looking back doors. As you can observe in this picture! But these pictures comfort me and remind me of the warmth of Europe (that I miss so much sometimes) Leave a Comment

Belleville (20th Arrondissement) and Gare de l'Est (10th) neighborhoods are a wonderful change of pace if you're sick of showpiece Paris, and want to see a real neighborhood with real people. They're rough around the edges, old, worn-down, peeling, full of people from all nations and walks of life. They're also, beneath the wear and tear, quite beautiful. Because they've resisted gentrification, there's an authenticity to the feel of the streets and buildings and people you won't find elsewhere. In a strange way they remind me of the New york city of my imagination--the one I couldn't find in the real NYC. The real Sesame Street is in Paris. There's a nice park in Belleville, and it's home to Rue de Menilmontant, the namesake of one of my favorite Charles Trenet songs. At the time I was there, the lower rents seemed to be attracting a strong artistic community, so you might stumble onto artist's studios, or a courtyard full of strange sculptures. But then again, it might be bland and gentrified by now, like everything else. Belleville Metro: Belleville, Couronnes, Menilmontant Gare de l'Est Metro: Gare de l'Est station Leave a Comment

Paris rebuilt for many and many times. The great rebuilding was the result of the French revolution. The government’s aim was to destroy small streets and build direct boulevards. This style of city planning had to help the government to control people walkouts or armed conflicts. Narrow streets of old Paris is a rarity in modern city. Leave a Comment
