  • Well, this might as well still be part of Paris unless they've been all washed away. I made these little stickers for us to post on the sticker boards around all the cities we go to. You can see them on the pole. My stickers are pretty simple, mostly I like to admire other people's work when it comes to stickers and in Paris is was quite a nice surprise to discover a completely different style than in Germany. French Graffiti is a completely different style anyway.
Of course, I don't approve of public monuments (for example) being vandalized for the sake of underground art but having specially designated places like it seemed in Paris is a good idea. I think urban art is at all times more powerful than the art secluded in galleries. Urban art is subject to constant interpretation and there's never place for ever lasting master pieces but this is the charming part, that urban art is always changing, always more or less annonymous, always revitalizing the urban space.
Some of my friends back in University had research done concerning urban art.

Did you see the movie De-Lovely about the life and times of composer Cole Porter? It's an underrated great little gem of a Paris movie starring Kevin Kline as Cole Porter and Ashley Judd as his Kentucky-born socialite wife, Linda Porter. This was their Paris home.

It may have been here that Cole Porter brought the decadent dance, the Charleston, to the Parisian elite via American black dance artist & singer, Bricktop.

You may read more about the Porters in this inimitable guide Expatriate Paris: A Cultural & Literary Guide to Paris of the 1920s.

    Walking Around: Les Invalides
  • Tip Rating:
  • Les Invalides consists of a complex of buildings in the 7th arrondissement containing museums and monuments, all relating to the military history of France, as well as a hospital and a retirement home for war veterans, the building's original purpose. It is also the burial site for some of France's war heroes. The most notable tomb at Les Invalides is that of Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821) in the crypt under Mansart's dome. Napoleon was initially buried on Saint Helena Island, but King Louis-Philippe arranged for his remains to be brought to St. Jerome's Chapel in Paris in 1840. A renovation of Les Invalides took many years, but in 1861 Napoleon was finally moved to his current "retirement home" in the most prominent location under the dome at Les Invalides. I've always been wondering who thought up a pompous first name, such as Napoleon. Probably his parents.

    Walking Around: Center of France
  • Tip Rating:
  • Right in front of the famous Notre Dame church, about 20 metres from its front facade, there is a simple bronze milestone. This stone indicates the zero point of France, as it has been for hundreds of years. From here distances from Paris to other cities in France and even outside of France are measured. At the 10th of October 1924 the stone was placed.

The stone is not exactly the centre of France, that lies more to the south of the country, but it is the place where centuries ago the first beginning of the city was built.

Lots of people just walk over the stone, looking at the impressive front of the Notre Dame, but just take a look down, and you can see the official centre of France...

    Walking Around: Avenue Rapp
  • Tip Rating:
  • One of the best things about Paris is that you often come across some great sights just by wandering aimlessly around. We were walking near the Eiffel Tower one day and came across this really cool doorway at No. 29 on Avenue Rapp. It's clearly Art Nouveau in style though there's otherwise nothing special about the buildings - its the entrance to a block of apartments. Avenue Rapp starts below Place de la Resistance at Pont de l'Alma.

    Walking Around: Avenue Secretan
Climb the staircases on Georges Lardennois street and when you get to the top, you have this splendid view of les Buttes Chaumont and Montmartre.

    Walking Around: Unexplored Museums
I love to visit the museums not typically given much attention in traditional guidebooks...for instance, the Musee Baccarat (Baccarat Crystal Museum) and the Musee de la Magie (Museum of Magic).

    Walking Around: Quartier Latin
Quartier Latin is the best place to meet people and hang out with students. Out of tourist season go to Le Marais.
