Walking Around: Side Streets
Although there is much to be said about sticking to the main thoroughfares, there is so much to see, unique sights, sounds and smells on side streets. If you are worried about getting too far from areas you recognize, wander down a side streets and few blocks and then return to the familiar main street, or wander a block or two from the main street and follow a side street that parallels it.

An empty Champs Elysées... again that should not be an off the beaten path tip. But when is the Champs Elysées empty? Well, on the eve of an important event, just before it starts. In this case it was the World Champion finals, with Italy playing against France. France lost, and the Champs Elysées remained virtually empty!

Walking Around: Place Monge and Rue Monge
I found the streets around Place Monge (metro station here) to be very nice, pretty quiet, with some hotels and some cafes, walking on Rue Monge is peaceful.

This is some 200 meters S-E of the Pantheon, so in the Latin Quarter. After Pantheon another 200 meters and you are on Blvd Saint-Michel and to the entry in Le Jardin du Luxembourg.

Walking Around: Quartier Montorgueil-Saint Denis
The Montorgueil-Saint Denis Quarter, also known as the Pedestrians Quarter, is where I stayed in Paris when I lived there for a year. Located very centrally in Paris in the second aronidissement, it is surprisingly overseen and most people do not see the district! This is a great shame!! A lot of the buildings do not have elevators because they were constructed a long time ago but most of the apartments have wooden beams...a typically Parisian area!!

The streets of the quartier are all cobbled, which is a nightmare for high heels but adds to the beauty of all the cafes and the restaurants! Fois Gras can be easily found in most french restaurants in the area!! The principal street is Rue Montorgueil (there is a famous painting of this road in the Musee d'Orsay) where most of the restaurants are, as well as two fantastic ice cream shops! It is also a very fashionable and chic area, with a lot of designer shops.

I would definately recommend dining in this quartier, I have eaten in a lot of the restaurants and have never been disappointed by the ambience, nor the service and most importantly, i have never been disappointed by the food!

DIRECTIONS:
Metro: Chatelet (lines 1, 4, 7, 11, 14) Sortie: Rue Turbigo, Rue Rambuteau, Etienne Marcel (line 4), Reameur Sebastopol (lines 3, 4), Sentier (line 3)
RER: Chatelet les Halles (A, B, D)

Still in the 6th arrondissement, our group (shrimp56, tsarina, Michael Osman & I) is now at 4, Cour du Commerce St-André at the Office de Tourisme Catalogne. Cour du Commerce-St-André was previously a moat just outside of the city wall. When later the wall was removed, the moat was filled in and became a street. Located inside the Office de Tourisme Catalogne is a tower of the former wall seen clearly through the large windows. The entrance is gained via the accompanying Cour de Rohan.

Watch for tips covering the Philippe-Auguste wall on shrimp56's Paris page!
