The Umbrella: Your Friend in Paris
  • Tip Rating:
  • Alot of people want to know what is Parisian weather like during different parts of the year. Of course, the weather can be generalized for a specific season. However, Parisian weather is highly changeable. This means that one can visit in October and arrive in Paris to full sun and balmy temperatures. But the following day may do a 360 degree change and turn out to be cold and drizzly. It happens and it's unpredictible. One piece of advice is to pack a small, folding umbrella. This way you are prepared and you don't have to go to spend extra euro for an umbrella.

    Shoes to Pack
  • Tip Rating:
  • Cobblestones are terrible for your feet so be sure you bring a couple of well-fitting, comfortable shoes. Interchange the shoes as necessary. However, if the pointy toe/stiletto heel look is for you (I like it too), hey, go for it. Just be careful:)

In winter (for women) it is not only necessary but also nice-looking to wear knee-high boots. However, to be practical, make sure the soles are non-skid and the heels not too high.

    Don't forget the..
  • Tip Rating:
  • Good comfortable shoes. The only way to really get to see all of Paris is to walk up and down the streets. Not to mention the walking in the museums. Sneakers will definitely set you apart from many other world travelers. A pair of comfortable walking shoes are a better choice.

You can't go to Paris without lots of film or digital memory for your camera. Don't forget that the power is different so you'll need to have a converter so you don't blow out your batteries while recharging them.

A French phrase book. You don't have to speak perfect French to communicate in Paris as many people there speak fluent English. That said, you should still consider learning a few phrases.. hello, please, thank you, etc. If you try, people will be more apt to help!

Small things, that make the difference.
  • Tip Rating:
  • A Backpack for a women is essencial. I don't use it at home, but during my travel my bagback was really helpful to carry from makeup to advil, wipe towels, maps, etc. Just make sure it's not easy to open for pickpockets, mine can't be open until you take it out of your sholders.

    Walking shoes, not white sneakers.

I took my Advil travel size with me everywhere, I really use it! I had headache probably from the dehydratation (the sun was hot!) plus all my body was in pain adter all the walking.

All you can! If digital don't forget the charger and an extra battery in case the charger don't work as mine =(
Memmory as much as you can. If you have a 35mm camera lots of film, color film and a couple of Black and white film are also helpful.

Umbrella. I also found this little travel bags with detergent at Wallmart and I took a few with me, it was the best thing I put on my luggage, well, that and the wipes or wet towels . I found them so helpful! To clean hands, my son's face, but most for the shoes. After walking at Jardin des Tuileries and many other places my shoes where all white. Many places have this walking areas with white sand and the shoes end up all cover in white.(You don't want to look like that in the pictures!)
It's going to sound logic, but really; Don't forget the toothbrush, it always happend to me! But this time I forgot my hair comb too and suffer the consecuences, I end up buying one, mini size of really bad quality for 8 euros!
Also a Map, I receive many at the hotel, tourist information, but the best was the one I buy before travel it was a pocket size pop up map. You don't look so bad trying to read a huge piece of paper, beacuse it;s smaall, easy to carry in your jeans, etc and it was easier to read.

Good camera - don't forget complete care...
  • Tip Rating:
  • I carried along an analog single-lens reflex camera besides a digital one.
During the trip, I thought it has been operating normally, but when developing the film, after the trip, I found it that even one picture has not been taken.
The film was sent, but there had been a trouble in the shutter. I never knew these things, you know!
Finally, I've lost over 200 shots in Paris and Versailles ...some of those would be truly good...

I traveled light...black and tan were my major colors, choosing slacks and tops that I could team up for different outfits. I also took one dress for dinners out, a leather jacket, 2 scarfs, pajamas, a pair of black heels, black loafers, and toiletries. It all fit in a nice carry-on, and I wasn't weighed down by tons of luggage (something I despise!)

I visited Paris in July and I am SO glad that I took my leather jacket! It was quite chilly that month in 2000, especially for a Florida gal like me! I'm also happy that I by-passed my usual summer colors and stuck with black as my primary color scheme...as it turns out, I blended in just fine with the natives and didn't stick out like a sore thumb!

Wear strong shoes for Paris, good walking boots are best, we wore our comfiest sandals but still our feet ached because of the huge amount of walking we did

we really wished we had taken a pedometer with us ! it would have been really interesting to see just how far we had walked

    Extra Socks!!
  • Tip Rating:
  • Make sure to where extra socks, especially for all the walking that you will do! My wife has two pairs of socks on and she still got blisters!!

Cream for the blisters (fortunately another VT member, tini58de, gave us some cream that helped with the pain!)

More film and a video camera if you have one

    Band-aids for those blisters!

    Carte de Musées et Monuments
  • Tip Rating:
  • If you are planning to visit a few museums and monuments I recommend to buy La Carte de Musées. It's a pass that allows you to take in in a lot of places for free and... without making lines! Very important if you at summer. I purchased it in Barcelona (in Maison della France), so it's really useful.
I saw people making about 2 hours of waiting lines in Versailles or Louvre, and with that pass I just took in showing it =)

Pack, then take half of it out
  • Tip Rating:
  • Let me start by saying that I am notorious for packing way more than I ever need. That said, I made a real effort to take only what would fit in my one and only suitcase. My daughter says you might have to pay extra if your bag weighs too much. I can't verify that, but my French wasn't good enough to argue with a French ticket agent.

We traveled in March and we knew the weather would be in the 40's most of the time. I really think you could take 2 pairs of black slacks (washable if possible), and a few tops or sweaters and do fine. I stuck to black, but took more than I needed. If it's cold, who knows what's under that coat. I threw if a few pashminas (my daughter swears I took a dozen!) to add some zip to my somber wardrobe. We noticed that most of the Parisian women had scarves all wrapped in different ways. I felt tres chic!! My daughter took a short black peajacket and I took a black raincoat with a zip- in lining and used it. We forgot gloves. A mistake. For the first time in my life I didn't take a dozen pairs of shoes. Whatever you take ,they better be comfortable. We found black shoes with rubber soles were perfect and weren't too sporty so we got by with 2 pairs of shoes for the whole trip. Don't forget a small, collapsible umbrella!

I understand that in order to bring prescription drugs into France it should be in the original pill bottle. I took one set in my tote and another set in my suitcase to be on the safe side.

My camera had a rechargable battery , and I just bought a disposable one as a back up. I think some cameras don't use anything but rechargable ones. In that case, spring for an adapter. If you have a digital make sure you take a backup memory card. You will want to take a zillion pictures in Paris. I am sure they can be purchased there but wouldn't want to have to try and find the right kind.

You might consider a smaller fold up type tote in case you have lovely items you buy that you can't squeeze into your suitcase. Also, I always try and take some zip type plastic bags for dirty clothes, and anything that might spill. If you forget something who cares! You're in Paris. Won't it be fun to shop for a replacement!
