  • Pack as light as possible of course. Try shipping back items that are heavy (bottles of wine, etc) instead of lugging them back with your luggage. Also pack and extra carry on bag for bring back any purchases that might not make it into your existing luggage. Packing a couple space saver bags might be helpful as well.

    Thick soled shoes!
I'm a high heel kind of gal and couldn't imagine being in Paris in sneakers! So i suffered in high heeled - thin soled boots. For my next trip, I'm still sporting the heels, but I'll bring thick/soft soled boots so i can tolerate those cobblestones.

Most better hotels will have shampoos and soaps as well as hair dryers.

Make it a digital camera. Take tons of photos - you can always delete them later. Extra memory cards or or a laptop to load your photos onto as you take them each day.

    Compact Umbrella

Finally, bring an elec converter/adapter. Get one with a surge protector should something go wrong. I cooked my hair dryer in London when the converter wasn't working properly. I'm getting the one with a built in surge protector for the next trip.

Moving for some months from your paradise
  • Tip Rating:
  • Do not take too much,
it's heavy and you have only 2 hands

Take the best and the nicest.
you may buy stuff, in your new location if necessary

There is everything in France and it's quite cheap or reasonable for good quality

Buy in Canada or US it's better and cheaper with Tax refund, sometimes.

PARIS Seine Boulogne and South of France, nice locations if the weather is nice too.

if you carry Laptop, electronics, put all the accesories and cables together in the same bag. if not, you may lost them or loose time to find the small cable. Make a list of you main things with number of boxes, where they are.

    Berets in Paris
  • Tip Rating:
  • Berets seem to have made a comeback this year in the City of Light. This year, as no other, I've noticed berets all over the place. This was one huge surprise as even on le Parisians one saw berets. Most beautiful was a stylish red one on a grandmotherly 80-ish woman on le Metro. I was glad to see that it had made its comeback since there were so few during my last visit in 2003.

    Don't get lost!
  • Tip Rating:
  • If you are a regular traveller to Paris, you might find it handy to get a book called 'Paris par Arrondissement'. It is an A - Z of streets with maps and shows all those tiny little streets that the normal tourist maps do not. If you can't get one in your local bookshop, you can get one in the major bookstores in Paris. Ours also has a Metro and RER map.

    Adapters, cameras, clothes
  • Tip Rating:
  • In the winter - scarves are a must! If you don't want to appear like an obvious tourist, you would wear dark, solid colored clothing. Nice slacks - polyester blend or gabbardine. No tennis shoes or flip flops. Hard closed up shoes with a slight heel. I took a trench coat instead of a thick wool coat and that worked well for me.

Digital recorders/cameras are a must have! And, spend the money for the titanium batteries - they last. I was constantly reviewing my photos to make sure they were good and this process uses up the batteries quick.

Don't just bring one adapter and don't count on the people at Radio Shack to tell you this is all you need. If it wasn't for my friend, she brought several (a kit) and only a couple of them worked out for us. Also, your high watts dryers, straighteners or curling irons will blow out the electrical - you need to bring electronics with low watts. We had 4 curling irons and my $6 iron was the only one that worked.

    Woolly Jumper
  • Tip Rating:
  • Warning, if you are going to Paris in the winter months, take very thick jumpers, it is freezing!!!!!!!!! Something to do with the Mistral, a vicious wind that blows down through France from Siberia (apparently!)
I'd also take chapstick cos I had hell of a job trying to explain "chapstick" to the shop assistant!

Lots of film/memory sticks. It's so beautiful and with so many famous landmarks you'll be snapping the whole time!

    Pack A Small Flashlight
  • Tip Rating:
  • It's helpful to pack a mini flashlight for those midnight trips to the WC. Hotel rooms are compact making your chances of stubbing your toe easier and sometimes the light switches are not in convenient locations. So one way to avoid this is to have a flashlight handy.

    Bring Your Nicer Clothes
  • Tip Rating:
  • A good rule of thumb in Paris: don't evoke their stereotype of the American tourist and they won't evoke yours---that nasty, nasal Frenchman. With that in mind, try to blend in as much as possible. The French tend to dress more conservatively than people in other countries. Usually skirts or dresses for girls are more appropriate than short shorts and just as good in hot weather. Don't worry about overdressing; Parisians are very stylish, and even students dress well. Closed shoes, solid colored pants, and plain shirts are ideal, not baggy pants/jeans or tennis shoes.

    Packing List
  • Tip Rating:
  • There are many attractions and superb sights in Paris, so I strongly recommend the sport shoes.

If you have a video camera, you need a long-time battery (4-6 hours/day estimated time for 1 1/2 hour of effective recording time), especially if frequently using the zoom options or the display recording mode.

Changeable Weather - Pack an Umbrella
  • Tip Rating:
  • I'd advise packing a small travel umbrella. The weather in Paris, even in the summer, was very changeable -- incredibly hot and muggy one day, cool and rainy the next. The only umbrellas we could find in the shops were luxury men's brollies priced at 42 Euros, or golf umbrellas, much too wide to fit on the narrow sidewalks, so we ended up walking in the rain.

I also wished that I had brought a 24-hour digital watch, which would have saved me the trouble of translating opening times and train timetables in my head.
