The L'Arc de Triomphe (in English "the Arch of Victory") is built in 1830's, to remember those who fought for France, particularly during the wars at the times of Napoleon. Nowadays it also includes the tomb of the unknown soldier.

The monument is more than 51 m (165 feet) high, 45 m (148 feet) wide and 22 m (72 feet) deep. It is the second largest triumphal arch in existence. The design was inspired by the Roman Arch of Titus.

Visitors can climb up to the roof of the Arch, it requires normal physical condition and the ability to walk up a lot of stairs. It is worth it; once up there, one can see almost whole Paris. Wonderful views to e.g. the main street Avenue de Champs-Elysees. Also La Tour d'Eiffel (the Eiffel Tower) can be easily seen. It may be a little windy up there, so take enough clothes (depends of course on the time/month).

Arc de Triomphe: Views from the Top
The views from the top of the Arch are unique, not in the fact that they have 360 degree views of Paris, but because of the views of the Champs Elysee and the other streets of Paris that interconnect with the Arch. Also since the Arch is not as high as the Eiffel Tower, the views of the city are at eye level, as opposed to a birds eye level that you get with the Tower views, so its a different perspective anyway. The best time to check out the views from the Arch are at dusk, that way you can see a sunset over the city and then later see the Eiffel Tower light up and sparkle like a fire cracker!

Arc de Triomphe: Arc de Triomphe
This is another one of the must see things in Paris. It’s situated at the top end of the Champs Elysées. To get up close you'd better take the underground tunnel rather than risking the road. You can take a tour of the Arc and climb up onto the top. This gives you some great views of Paris and shows the planning that went into creating the shape of the city.

"Commissioned in 1806 by Napoleon, shortly after his victory at Austerlitz, it was not finished until 1836. There are four huge relief sculptures at the bases of the four pillars. These commemorate The Triumph of 1810 (Cortot); Resistance, and Peace (both by Etex); and The Departure of the Volunteers, more commonly known by the name La Marseillaise (Rude).
La Marseillaise by François Rude; One of four reliefs on the pillars of the Arch. The day the Battle of Verdun started in 1916, the sword carried by the figure representing the Republic broke off. The relief was immediately hidden to conceal the accident and avoid any undesired associations or interpretations as a bad omen.

Engraved around the top of the Arch are the names of major victories won during the Revolutionary and Napoleonic periods. The names of less important victories, as well as those of 558 generals, are to found on the inside walls. Generals whose names are underlined died in action.

Beneath the Arch is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and eternal flame commemorating the dead of the two world wars."
