 | Paris Arc de Triomphe Reviews | 51 - 60 of 573 | | It seemed to be a never ending climb up the Arc de Triomphe but once reaching the top, completely out of breath - it was worth it. The view from above overlooking Paris was unbelievable! I took several memorable photos from here. Directions: Metro Line 1, 2, RER A : Charles-de-Gaulle Etoile

The only (sane) way to get below the Arc de Triomphe is by an underground tunnel on the north side of the Champs Elysees. Once there, spend some time looking up close at the intricate detail in the Arc, a tableau of French history. You can also go to the top of the Arc, for a fee, to get a great view of the city. As it says on the website sited below, the Arc is "the most famous symbol of (France's) national history". Spend a few minutes here, and you'll really feel that history. France's Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is buried right below the Arc de Triomphe. Indeed, Rememberance Day ceremonies are held here every November. This unknown French soldier is from World War I. I'm sure his family missed him and loved him very much. Leave a Comment Directions: Metro Line 1, 2, RER A : Charles-de-Gaulle Etoile

Plopped down in the middle of the biggest rotary in France, this 164 foot arch, erected during Napoleon's time, is worth the visit. There is a tunnel underneath the rotary so that you don't have to brave the nine lanes of traffic as I saw two people on the tour with me do once (stupid). After a climb up a dizzying spiral staircase you will come upon a mini-museum in the top of the arch with war artifacts and such. Clearing the roof of the building you will see another of the great views of Paris clear to the Eiffel Tower in the next arrondisment and even the Sacre Coeur in Montmartre. What a very impressive gateway to a city, fantastic place to have a home coming parade, albeit the Tour de France, troops marching triumphantly thorugh or even French sportsmen parading trophies such as The football World Cup. You can help but be impressed with this, theres also the tomb of the Unknown Soldier,a poingniant reminder of Frances past. It costs 7.50 euros to go up but if you have a disabled badge its free and theres a lift. Here is a photo of me enjoying the great views of Paris from the top of the Arc de Triomphe... It is a long climb up steps to the top but well worth it... In this shot, you can make out the Eiffel tower in the background... Of course, this is the largest triumphal arch in the world, built by Napoleon to celebrate the very short-lived victories of his Grand Armée... We took the kids to the Arc De Triomphe,,and after purchsing the tickets,,they had NO idea we had to climb up 284 stairs,my 7 year old daughter said,,mommy where`s the elevator? then I smiled and said,,let`s play the counting game.....it worked,,they climbed and counted the steps up and before they knew it,,we were over Paris ;-) Leave a Comment Directions: Metro Line 1, 2, RER A : Charles-de-Gaulle Etoile

Another of Paris's symbol . Built by Napolean after his great battle of Austerlitz in 1805, because he promised his army " You shall go home beneath triumphal arches.". The two lower bas relief features " Triumph of Napolean " and " Departure of Volunteers in 1792 while the higher ones features " Battle of Aboukir " and " General Marceau's funeral respectively. ....the Arch is much bigger compared to arches you see in London. In fact its so huge but it sits on a roundabout which has so many roads branching out. Leave a Comment Directions: Metro Line 1, 2, RER A : Charles-de-Gaulle Etoile

Ok.. this is the second story about my adventures at the Arc de Triomphe. :) The first time I went to the Arc was at night. Sooo, we walked up towards it and saw it beautifully lit from the numerous lights surrounding it. I looked at my friend and said "hey.. we have to check it out" :) Between the arc and us was the wide road that circled the arc (hmm, the same road from my Part one of my ARC story :) ). So.. we took off across the road. dogging cars.. buses.. and trucks.. horns honked.. tires squeeled and drivers were yelling at us. But.... we made it across. We were quite proud of our achievement.. I mean here were right next to the Arc... very cool. Well, until we saw a little old lady walk by us.. and then some children! Hmm, how did they cross the road? It was only then that we realized that there was a tunnel access to the Arc LOL So.. at least we can say that we did survive running across that road... and if anyone asks, we did it on purpose and knew about the tunnel access the whole time :) Leave a Comment Directions: Metro Line 1, 2, RER A : Charles-de-Gaulle Etoile

Paris has many viewpoints - Tour Eiffel, Tour Montparnasse, la Grande Arche etc, but in my opinion you get the best view of Paris from Arc de Triomphe. You feel you are the center of the city as the 12 avenues meet around you. The best time to visit is on a busy weekday, then you can really see the chaos in the roundabout below. Even better, come before dusk and stay until it is dark. Then you see how the look of Paris changes. Leave a Comment Directions: Metro Line 1, 2, RER A : Charles-de-Gaulle Etoile
