 | Paris Invalides Reviews | 11 - 20 of 246 | | One of the most beautiful parts of Les Invalides is the magnificent Eglise du Dome designed by Jules Hardouin-Mansart and added to the ensemble in 1706. The elegant golden cupola, which can be remarked from far away, gives to the whole ensemble a royal aspect. The four Virtues lay on the corner of the balustrade. The interior, with beautiful painted cupolas and low-relief sculptures, was modified in order to receive Napoleon's body. In the six smaller lateral chapels, located on both sides, other tombs of important French people can be found, while the tombs of General Duroc and Bertrand are located at the entrace to the crypt. The magnificent sarcophagus containing Napoleon's body is placed in a circular crypt located in the center of the church. It's important to emphasize that the central crypt was made so as not to alter the view of the altar from the entrance. The access to the crypt is made through two stairs located on both sides of the altar. At the entrance to the crypt two impressive bronze statues hold the Imperial sceptre and the crown. The sarcophagus is made of red porphyry and is placed on a green granite base. The body of the Emperor is placed in 6 coffins, one inside the other, made of: tin-plate, mahogany, lead, ebony and oak. The tomb of Napoleon II is placed in a small chapel inside the crypt of Napoleon's Tomb, with access from the gallery surrounding the red porphyry sarcophagus. Napoleon II, King of Rome, Prince Imperial of France was the son of Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte and his second wife Archduchess Marie Louise of Austria. He died of tuberculosis at Schonbrunn Palace in Vienna in 1832 and his remains were transferred to Les Invalides in 1940 as a gift of Adolf Hitler. Directions: M: Invalides (lines 8,13)

With Paris Museum Pass we had also free entry to Musee de l'Armee, one of the richest army museum, with more than 500,000 pieces. Beside the sword and the armour of King Francois I and the pistol of Charles V of Spain, I've especially appreciated the Oriental Room presenting arms from Japan, India and Persia. There are also displayed many uniforms from Napoleon's times and also an impressive collection of weapons from the 17C to the Second Empire. A hall dedicated to the First World War presents the situation of the troops during the war through animated maps. Directions: M: Invalides (lines 8,13)

Hotel Les Invalides was originally built by King Louis XIV (the Sun King) to look after the wounded and homeless soldiers (it was also a monument to his own glory). Towards the end of the project, King Louis decided to build the Dome Church within the existing complex of buildings. A soldiers church already existed, but this church was designed to be used exclusively by Louis, and was supposed to house the royal tombs. However after Louis died, these plans were abandoned. However what did happen in 1841 was that Napoleons remains were brougt back from St Helena (19 years after he died) and placed in the middle of the crypt. The 7th district is the location for a few sights and among them is Les Invalides. This was created by Louis XIV as a home for disabled soldiers. The huge, ornate dome was designed my Mansart after the death of the king. If you approach Les Invalides from the Pont Alexandre III it is a very impressive sight to behold. Long entranceway with a huge lawn with the building in the center. You can also approach it via rue de Varenne to the side. No matter what approach you take the building is huge and it actually resembles the Pantheon. Not only is Les Invalides still housing the retired military personnel but it's famous for Napleon's tomb and the army museum. You pay one entrance fee to see both the tomb and museum. Napoleon's tomb is in the main building that has the dome. It's directly in the center of the building and is huge. His remains are interred in several coffins within the tomb. The tomb itself is red and is made from Finnish porphyry. It's funny to think of this small emperor within this enormous tomb. Above Napoleon's tomb is an altar and to one side there is another tomb, that of his brother, Joseph Bonaparte, Commander Foch, and the Vicompte de Turenne. There are also model displays of the French Army and some examples of military dress. Leave a Comment Address: Place des Invalides, 75007Directions: From rue de Varenne walk towards the direction of the Eiffel Tower or walk down the Seine until you reach the Pont Alexandre III, cross the street to Les Invalides (cannot miss it)

Les Invalides , do yo know what it means ? My French friends told me it means ' weak ' and i asked why when its the resting place of French's military Genius - Napolean Bornaparte ? Actually Louis the 14th, the king who built the Versailles palace, staged many wars in Europe. In 1670, he decided to build the Invalides, a military hospital on the Seine river left banks. The objective was to create an institution to take care of wounded soldiers. With their large church topped by a golden dome and 13 hectares building, the Invalides are a masterpiece of French classical architecture. Look for the Musée de l'Armée (Army museum) and its large collection of armours from the Middle Ages. Varenne on line 13 is the nearest metro station. Leave a Comment

Les Invalides is an impressive ensemble including the beautiful Dome with Napoleon's tomb and the Army Museum displaying a rich collection of weapons and other souvenirs. Les Invalided was built between 1671-1676 following Louis XIV's order and using funds raised from soldiers. It was suppossed to house 4,000 persons. During Napoleon, Les Invalides became a military mausoleum and since 1840 Napoleon's tomb can be found in the Dome. Directions: M: Invalides (lines 8, 13)

The Invalides were created under Louis XIV, the Sun King, to come to the aid of old soldiers who had been forced into either panhandling or subsiding on church charity especially those who had been wounded in battle (hence `invalides’); . So the institution of the Invalides was created in 1670 and quickly became home to 4000 wounded soldiers. Many of the arms used by the mob when it attacked the Bastille on 14 July 1789 were taken from Les Invalide on the morning of that day. Despite resistance by the posted sentries, they were overwhelmed by the mob which finally entered the underground rifle storehouse. Roughly 28,000 arms were taken. Napoleon’s tomb is a fairly imposing structure, housed in red porphyry, laid on a slab of green granite and consisting of seven coffins set one inside the other, the tomb is at the center of the room, atop a high pedestal which stands in a cellar . All around the room are friezes depicting Napoleon’s many deeds, with the emperor himself represented in each as the Emperor of Rome Today, some handicapped people still live in a part of it, while the rest has been turned into museums. Among them are a War Museum dedicated to Charles DeGaulle; a museum dedicated to the horse soldiers; another one of armor; one filled with military banners and flags that had actually been carried into war, and the church of St. Louis which houses the tomb of Napoleon as well as his brother, Joseph, who had been the King of Spain. What stuck me most was the row after row of the flags of napoleons grand army, each representing thousands of men who fought for this megalomaniac. You could almost feel the pride and pomp they must have had on their way to Moscow 500,000 strong and the humiliation they experienced leaving their pennants on the snow as only 50,000 returned, Leave a Comment Directions: L’Hôtel Des Invalides, Place des Invalides
