 | Paris Invalides Reviews | 231 - 240 of 246 | | Spent a lot of time at this museum and the tomb of Napoleon. I had no idea that this place existed. The tour books dont do this place justice. We were at the history of war and army museum that was just renovated recently for a good 2 hours looking at memorabilia and historical artifacts. This does get a bit boring after a while if you are not a military buff (in my opinion) but I got in free with my military ID. Teachers and students get a discount too.

The Hotel des Invalides was a shelter for former soldiers. In 1671 Louis XIV decided to built a huge centre to take care of these men. Lots of soldiers had became wounded during the wars those days and as a sign of respect thay deserved the care they needed. Tha architect Libéral Bruant got the task to built this shelter, that was completed in 1674. In 1677 the construction of the church in the centre was started. This church wasn´t completed until 1706. At the end of the 17th century the Hotel des Invalides offered a place to 4.000 former soldiers. They men lived here, following their own rules: a mixture of religious and military rules. They also had their own task inside the centre: doing handcraft works like making carpets and shoes. Nowadays the Hotel des Invalides has two purposes. First there is a huge War Museum inside the complex. It´s being renovated from 2003-2008, so only parts of the collection are open for public. I´ve been to the impressive and very complete exhibition about the Second World War. The second purpose of the Hotel today is the same as what is was built for. The Institution Nationale des Invalides applies a shelter to former soldiers, that still live in the Hotel des Invalides. They surely have one beautiful home there! Leave a Comment Address: 129, Esplanade des InvalidesDirections: Daily opened from 10:00 - 18:00, free entrance to the church.

We were staying near Invalides so we stopped in to buy our Museum Passes here. I thought we would just visit Napoleon's tomb and move along but my husband wanted to see the war museum, Musee de l'Armee, so we ended up spending several hours here. The Hotel des Invalides was commissioned by Louis XIV, the Sun King, to house soldiers with disabilities, Louis was dead by the time the building was finished. The gilded dome can be seen from all over Paris, the dome is the 2nd tallest structure in Paris behind the Eiffel Tower. We spent at least an hour going through the Musee de l'Armee and my husband probably could have spent lots more than that if we had longer in Paris. The collection covers the entire history of France's military, of particular interest to my husband was the WWI exhibit and how it compared to the Imperial War Museum in London which he had just seen. He said that it was fairly balanced even if told from the French perspective. The 2nd part of our visit was to the domed building. When you walk in grab the included audioguide so you know what you are looking at, the tour covers the main floor where there is a chapel and several side chapels and then the tour takes you downstairs to see the tomb of Napoleon. Hôtel des Invalides has a symmetrical shape, which enabled to build it at two stages. The Eastern side was built in 1671-74 while the Western side was achieved when the first guests had already arrived. The hôtel was conceived for 2000 guests, but it hosted more than 3000 people at the same time. Today, the palace is a major museum centre. You can visit all these museums: - Musée de l'Armée, one of the richest weapon collections in the world; - Musée des Plans-Reliefs, which shows a large collection of military uniforms as well as plastic models of battle fields; - Musée de l'Ordre de la Libération, about World War II, it was opened in 1971; - Musée d'Histoire Contemporaine, where you can learn the French and European history from 1870 on (close on Mondays). An extensive collection of military arms, armour and uniforms. You'll be amazed at the size of the collections. My favourites were the armour collection and this small display of olden musical instruments. This museum is part of the museum cluster at Invalides Complex, under coming under the price of one ticket. All the museums are covered under the Carte des Musées et Monuments (Paris Museum Card) should you want to get one.. Directions: Metro: Invalides

Behind the altar covered by a baldachin are stairs that lead down to the crypt where Napoleon’s tomb sits. The outer of the seven coffins is of porphyry. In the floor it is circled by the names of his famous battles and by fine statues representing his campaigns. On the perimeter of the crypt are a series of sculpted niches each of which extols his great nonmilitary accomplishments, such as the Code Napoleon. In the central niche is a statue of him in his Imperial Coronation regalia looking out over a tomb slab in the floor for his son Napoleon II King of Rome. Leave a Comment

In 1670, King Louis XIV has this place built as a home for France's wounded soldiers. Designed by Libéral Bruant, it was completed in 1676. Today, it houses France's premier military museum. It has exhibits on the country's long military history from the Middle Ages through the World Wars. Initially the Hotel des Invalides was a residential complex for disabled soldiers built 1671-6, including a church (St. Louis). The main facade faces a drill-ground courtyard containing old bronze cannons surrounded by a moat. The facade has an interesting portal that leads to an inner courtyard with lateral pavillions that today house the reknowned Army Museum and other collections relating to War. There are still veteran residents as well. Behind the church is the Dome Church (1674-1708) with Napoleon's Tomb (since 1840). Bruant designed the Hotel; the Dome Church was the work of Hardouin-Mansart who also completed the Hotel. The ground stretching North from the Gate of the Hotel is a vast green Esplanade. It reaches the Seine at the Alexandre III Bridge and the road down the middle is a main Parisian traffic artery. Only one building sits in the Esplanade, the Aerogare de Paris (the air terminal). Under the Esplanade are parking garages and the drop-off and check-out spaces for most car agencies. Leave a Comment

Next to the Army Museum is this elaborate domed church. Begun in 1676 on the orders of King Louis XIV, it was designed by Jules Hardouin-Mansart. The dome was begun in 1706. This is one of the finest works of 17th century architecture anywhere. Inside are the tombs of Napoleon and other French generals such as Turenne and Vauban. There are also monuments to the French troops who fell in the country's wars. Leave a Comment Address: Esplanade des Invalides , 75007 ParisDirections: On the Left Bank, near the Eiffel Tower. Our friend Marc from Paris asked us what we would like him to take us to see, on our first afternoon in Paris and I remembered that I'd been past the gold Les Invalides dome several times in the past, but never stopped there, so he dropped us off (because parking was a nightmare) to have a look for 10 minutes while he circled the block.
