 | Paris Invalides Reviews | 31 - 40 of 246 | | The Hotel des Invalides includes 4 attractions: Church of the Dome, Church of the Soldiers, Military Museum and the Tomb of Napoleon. Plan to spend hours inside because there is a lot to see. The construction of "Les Invalides" began in 1670, in times of King Louis XIV. The main purpose of the building was to be a hospital for retired and wounded veterans. Leave a Comment

The reason most people visit Les Invalides is to see Napoleons Tomb. As Les Invalides was a soldiers rest home, it was considered a fitting place to lay Napoleon to rest (even if he had died 19 years earlier in St Helena). Napoleons remains are inside a large reddish coloured sarcophogus which has the prime spot inside the Dome church. It is possible to walk around the outside of this sarcophogus, but not to go right up to it. Also inside the church are some of Frances other military leaders, although to the average tourist, they will only be interested in seeing Napoleons tomb. ===================================== The department devoted to the world wars does not comprise heavy material such as tanks except some elements of tank turrets at the upper floor of WWII. The amateurs must go to the Tank Museum of Saumur (on the river Loire - www.musee-des-blindes.asso.fr ). However there is one tank in the army museum of the Invalides but hidden in a hall at the angle of the Army museum and the Saint-Louis cathedral. The visit is really worth it because the tank is one of the first operational tanks used successfully in WWI. My photo shows this famous light tank Renault FT 17 used since 1918 and produced to several thousands of specimens. Nearly 500 such tanks were engaged in the battle of Soissons. Those who have put their feet in a tank will appreciate the characteristics of this ancestor: Weight 7 to, length 5 m, shielding 22 mm and maximum speed 7,5 km/h. Crew of 2 men. Canon of 37 mm and machine-gun under rotating turret of 360°. The FT 17 fixed the type of tanks for the wars to come. Address: Invalides, Musée de l'Armée.

I wasn't too excited to visit a military museum but it turned out to be a very interesting way to spend the afternoon. There's a large collection of weapons, uniforms, equipment and most interesting for me, various propaganda posters. The posters are mostly from World War II and come from many different countries, including Nazi Germany, Japan, and the U.S. You can follow the details of World War II by reading the placards posted along your walk through the museum. I was surprised to have spent 4 hours there. Leave a Comment Address: Place des Invalides, 7ePhone: 01-44-42-37-72Directions: Metro: Latour-Maubourg, Varenne, or Invalides

Les Invalides contains the Musee de l'Armee, the Hotel des Invalides, and the Dome Church. The Hotel was built in the seventeenth century by Louis XIV for wounded soldiers. The Museum is very interesting with the emphasis on Napoleon and his adventures! The Dome Church is an impressive structure which does stand out in the Paris skyline. A former hospital for old and infirm soldiers founded by Louis XIV in 1670 is now a museum and the 'parking place' for Napoleon Bonaparte. . While there are many exhibits and an interesting chapel, the building itself and courtyard are the attraction for me. . Les Invalides was built by King Louis XIV in 1670. Napolean's body was interred there under the dome in 1861. . Among the others buried there are Claude Joseph Rouget de Lisle (1760 - 1836), who wrote France's national anthem, La Marseillaise and the author of "The Little Prince", Antoine Marie-Roger de Saint-Exupery (1900 - 1944). . Don't miss the courtyard or the view towards Pont St. Alexandre with the Grand and Petit Palais in view. Leave a Comment Address: Esplanade des Invalides

He wanted to be near the Seine, and after a few years of his death (I think it was 50 years later) his wishes became true. What best place also, as the church is impressive and close to the Arm museum, I am sure he is happy now. Invalides is the place of historical of french army. When you get there, you can walk around the outside space or you can get into the building. In this building, it's called Musee de L'Armee. The entrance fee is 5 euro. This price is reduced already because I use Youth Card to make some discount. When you go straight ahead and look into the basement floor, you will see the great Napoleon's Tomb. Furthermore, there is a museum contains historical objects of war. Also having video presentations about world war, you can take a seat for seeing there. Beside the building, there is a canteen. I had lunch here. Taste is not bad at all. The dessert is much more interesting. Leave a Comment Directions: Metro Line 13, Station Varenne.

Standing on the Pont Alexandre III and looking towards the left bank, you will have a great view of the shining Dome des Invalides. The church was built by King Louis XIV in 1670 and was meant as the private Royal tombe. This, however, never happened and in 1840 it became the resting place of Napoleon, more than 19 years after his death. The Invalides is very distinguishable by it’s gold colored dome. In this, the former emperor Napoleon is laid to rest in an ornately carved wooden tomb. All around the huge complex you will find antiquated cannons of the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. Inside, you will also find the Musée de l'Armée. Near by is also the French military academy.
