Coffins are placed in the big sarcophagus from a red granite. 12 winged Victories of emperor stand around. The Cathedral is a tribute of Napoleon memory.

Hôtel National des Invalides Inside Invalides lies Napoléon’s famous red porphyry Tomb. Six coffins lie stacked within each other like Russian doll boxes with the remains of the Emporer. I believe it is Napoléon's ashes that are inside although I've read that he was buried standing up. One thing I do know is that he is without his "best bits" as the British like to call them. It seems a urologist in the U.S. owns his 1-inch member preserved inside a glass jar. I visited Invalides in April 2003 to see the tombeau & to view the museum. You walk in on one level with the porphyry tomb laid out before you below. You can then walk below to see the tomb from various angles but don't get to close as it is heavily guarded. Inside are audio guides available for a few euros. Entry fee: 7€, 5.50€ students, free for anyone under 18 Photos: March 2001 & April 2006 Leave a Comment Address: 129 rue de Grenelle 75007Directions: 7th arrondissement near the Eiffel Tower - big gold dome - you can't miss it! Despite the stories and the general wackiness of his reputation, visiting Napolean's Tomb is a must simply to see the ornate burial chamber created for such a little man. He lies ensconced in five coffins, one inside the other. Napolean's Tomb is part of the Hotel Des Invalides, commissioned by Louis XIV to accomodate soldiers during military campaigns. The rooms are baren but the stroll is pleasant and the location is incomparable, a short stroll away is La Tour Eiffel, the Seine, and the Trocadero. From there all of Paris unfolds at your feet, if you squint you can see Notre Dame. Leave a Comment Address: Place des Invalides, 7eDirections: Métro: Latour-Maubourg, Varenne, or Invalides

In France, until 1670, there wasn't any institution dedicated to the care of the severely wounded and the lodging of impoverished old soldiers. Louis XIV who paid great attention to the fate of the soldiers that had served in his troops, desired “to construct a royal building of sufficient size and space to receive and lodge all officers and men who are crippled or old and frail, and to guarantee sufficient funds for their subsistence and their upkeep”. The architectural project consisted in a great building erected around a large royal courtyard with a church facing north and punctuated by smaller lateral courtyards. The foundation stone was laid on 30 November 1671. Louis XIV in person received the first pensioners who took up residence in October 1674. It took only three years to build the main building and the different courtyards. This hotel, which at the end of the 17th century housed some 4000 invalids, truly looked like a small town. The invalids organised in companies lead by officers had to obey military orders and follow religious rules. They worked in manufacturing workshops making shoes, woven tapestries and even illuminations. Today it serves as MUSEE DE L'ARMEE, Army Museum which has for example Napoleons Tomb and large collections of Arms and Armour, Artillery, reduce scale models, historic figurines etc. Leave a Comment

Originally intended as a hospital for the sick and the wounded of France's military campaigns, now it is a temple to France's military might. The magnificent golden dome, visible throughout Paris, provides a fitting crown for the final resting place of Napoleon. Leave a Comment

In 1840 it was decided to move the body of the French Emperor from the Island of Saint Helena to Paris, this all supervised by one of his close friend and army general. The dome Church was chosen to house Napoleon into a famous thomb, five succesive tombs (one made of tin, others in mahogany and ebony, this all set inside a single carved block of Finnish red porphyry. Tip : buy a museum pass - two days valid - and you will make profit - cost 30 euro Once entering this Dome you will notice the tomb itself in the center on a basic floor. On the left, ground level, a kind of museum of the emperor's personal mementos, the famous frock coat, his hat and his personal weapons. On the right side, many tombs of other French army hero's. Take a look upwards aswell - a renovated ceiling will impress you as well. Leave a Comment Address: Place des Invalides
