Les Invalides comprises the largest single collection/complex of monuments in Paris, including: Musée de l'Armée Musée des Plans-Reliefs Musée de l'Ordre de la Libération L'Eglise de St-Louis-des-Invalides In 1670, Louis XIV - the Sun King - founded Les Invalides near what was then called the Grenelle Plain. An old soldiers home, it was funded by a five year levy on the salaries of soldiers currently serving in the army at that time. The first stones were laid in 1671, for what was to become a complex providing quarters for 4,000. Construction followed plans drawn up by Libéral Bruant, and was completed in 1676. The Esplandade was layed out by Robert de Cotte. Construction of the dome began in 1706. Designed by Jules Hardouin-Mansart and completed by de Cotte after Mansart died in 1708. Many of the arms used by the mob when it attacked the Bastille on 14 July 1789 were taken from Les Invalide on the morning of that day. Despite resistence by the posted sentries, they were overwhelmed by the mob which finally entered the underground rifle storehouse. Roughly 28,000 arms were taken. The most significant event in the history of Les Invalides however, is unquestionably the return of the body of Napoléon in 1840. On 8 October 1840 - 19 years after the death of the Emperor - the coffin was exhumed and opened for two minutes before transport to France aboard the frigate La Belle Poule. Those present claim that the body remained in a state of perfect preservation. After arriving at Le Havre, it was brought up the Seine and landed at Paris at Courbevoie. On 15 December 1840 a state funeral was held, and despite a winter snowstorm, the hearse proceeded from the Arc de Triomphe down the Champs-Elysées, across the Place de la Concorde to the Esplanade and finally to the cupola in St Jerome's Chapel until the tomb - designed by Visconti - was completed. On 3 April 1861 Napoléon I came to his final rest in the crypt under de dome. Leave a Comment

Beneath the gilded dome of the Invalides cupola rest the remains of Napoleon Bonaparte, an emperor for the French and a King for Italy. Napoleon's body lies in six coffins: one is tin sheeted iron, then mahogany, the third and fourth are made of lead, the fifth of ebony and the sixth of oak. All these coffins are placed within a red porphyry sarcophagus. The rest of the Invalides complex was originally designed to be a military hospital. Most of the complex houses a large military museum and is one of the largest military museums in the world. After paying homage to Napoleon, you can see some of his actual uniforms, guns and medals enclosed in glass nearby. In the museum, you can see Napoleon's dog and his horse, stuffed and mounted. But don't take a photo with a flash! Leave a Comment Address: Metro: Varenne, InvalidesPhone: 01 44 42 37 67Directions: Esplanade des Invalides, 7th Arrondissement

This imposing structure or group of buildings was founded by Louis XIV for sick and wounded soldiers, and would later be assaulted by the townsmen for its weapons arsenal during the Revolution. Today, the number of tenants has dropped considerably, but the building itself now houses an extensive military museum. The approach to Invalides is by the grand Pont Alexandre III. Leave a Comment

The huge church in the middle of the Hotel des Invalides was designed by architect Jules Hardouin-Mansart. Its top reaches an height of 107 metres. In 1989 the dome and the details at the walls were made gold again. In total over 12 kilos of gold was needed for this project. Especially when the sun shines, this dome looks absolutely gorgeous. But the most famous about the Hotel des Invalides is the tomb of Napoleon. In 1840 the decision was made to bring the body of the emperor from St. Helens to Paris. Artist Visconti made the monument standing on his grave. Napoleon is kept in five different coffins. Two made of metal, two made of wood and one made of stone. He is kept in a basement right under the dome, surrounded by memories of the great things he did for France, and for the world: his personal pride is the conquering of Rome. His biggest achievements are a great administration of citizens, education of his people, the introduction of a standarised kilo, metre and liter, and the introduction of the constitution. In 1670, Louis the 14th had the Les Invalides built. It is a military hospital that took care of wounded soldiers. With its large church topped by a golden dome, Les Invalides is an excellent example of French classical architecture. The ashes of the greatest French military ruler, Napoléon, rest under the dome of the Invalides. Don't miss the Place des Invalides which is on the other side of the courtyard. The gardens and the elegant bridge over the Seine are gorgeous! The cafeteria at Les Invalides has very good food and I would recommend stopping there for lunch. Address: Bd Des Invalides and Avenue de TorvilleDirections: Take the M8 or the M13 to the Invalides Metro Station.

Heeeeere's Napoleon ...inside layer upon layer of tomb and sarcophagus, something like six compartments in all! Some think he's at the Pantheon...au contraire. There's also a wonderful museum of military history here, lots of great artillery and armory to wander about and then realize how fortunate you are to live in a time when these items can *only* be found in such a place! The dome by J. Hardouin Mansart, built between 1679 and 1706 magnificently crowns the building. It is the finest dome ever built in France and its 107-metre-high lantern was regilded in 1989 for the bicentenary of the French Revolution. From the outside you can see the facade with its two orders (Doric and Corinthian) of architecture. Statues of Charlemagne and St Louis by Coysevox and N Coustou decorate the niches of the lower levels; on the level above stand _Strength_, _Justice_ and _Temperance_ with _Prudence_ by Coysevox. Inside, beneath the dome is the recently restored large fresco by Charles de la Fosse depicting St Louis handing his sword to Christ. The Dome Church became a military burial place. It houses the tombs of Turenne, Vauban, Foch, Lyautey as well as those of Joseph and Jerome Bonaparte. In the crypt itself is the tomb of the Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte I fashioned out of blocks of red porphyry standing on a socle of green granite from the Vosges region. Leave a Comment
