 | Paris La Seine and Its Bridges Reviews | 21 - 30 of 431 | | I recommend all first time (and subsequent) visitors to take a Seine river cruise. One good company to try is the Bateaux Mouches. They go down the Seine and give a recorded overview of all the sights that are located along the Seine. Like a sightseeing tour bus this boat tour gives one an idea of what Paris has to offer and you can always return to visit a particular sight in detail later on. Leave a Comment

We got a Bateau-mouche from near the Eiffel Tower which took us right up the length of the Seine, past Notre Dame and back. It took about 1 hour. There was on-board commentary and music. We passed under many of the bridges, saw the Louvre, Musee d'Orsay, the Conciergerie and Notre Dame from the boat. Recommended for a relaxing hour on the river! Leave a Comment

Some people would probably think that most bridges are boring. Well a walk along the Seine will change that. Each bridge has it's own story, it's own unique architecture and character. The photograph is of Pont Alexandre named after Czar Alexander III. His son,Nicholas II opened the bridge in 1900. It was built to celebrate the creation of the Russia-French Alliance. The initial bridge was designed by the engineer Becquey de Beaupre; it comprised five cast iron arches with a span of 32 m, resting on four piers and two stone abutments. Its total length was 174 m and its width 13 m. Each arch had seven trusses of twenty one segments each. To prevent damage from traffic-induced vibration, the arches were placed on metal pads, which did not however prevent the appearance of cracks. In 1854, the bridge - now felt to be dangerous - was rebuilt with 1/8 depressed stone arches under the supervision of the engineers Michal and Savarin. Its width was extended to 18 m and the existing piers were re-used and strengthened. However, the work proved to be inadequate to meet the growing traffic demands and it was then widened a second time to 30 m, the new vaults being symmetrically juxtaposed with the old ones. The work continued from 1884 to 1885 under the supervision of Guiard, giving the bridge the appearance we can see today. Leave a Comment Directions: Quai d'Austerlitz, Quai de la Rapee

Our wonderful hotel manager gave us tickets for a tour with Bateaux Parisiens and recommended that we go at sunset. We sat outside on the huge tourist boat and -- despite being tempted to throttle the loud woman from Texas sitting near us -- it was a lovely trip. The armrests were actually telephone-like instruments that pulled up so that you could put one to your ear and listen to the commentary. The young woman guide was incredible – she moved seamlessly from French to English to German to Italian, and back to French, with very good accents in all four. We passed under 24 bridges and floated past major buildings like Notre Dame, the Louvre, Musée d’Orsay. They played Parisian-themed music in between – Gershwin’s "An American in Paris," with instructions to listen for the car horns, Edith Piaf’s "Vie en Rose,"and others, like "Can-Can" and "I Love Paris in the Springtime." I even found myself humming along with the annoying Texan – “I love Paris/Why, oh, why, do I love Paris…” as we glided on the Seine and watched as darkness fell and Paris truly became a City of Lights. It could have been hokey, but instead it was magical – so beautiful and romantic. Thank you so much for an unforgettable experience, Ouali! Leave a Comment Address: Aux pieds de la Tour Eiffel

Canal / river cruising in some cities is boring, but cruising the Seine in Paris at dusk after the lights began to come on and Tour Eiffel changes from chocolate iron to glowing gold was easily worth the time and money. Bateaux-Mouches is the one I heard most about, but I happened by chance to be near Pont Neuf when I saw Bateaux Les Vedettes du Pont-Neuf so I took that one instead. My favorite boats of theirs are "Europa" and "Sisley" as they are small and unconvered & open in good weather ( it is the smaller boat in back). They had a "live" tour guide (no recordings, thank god) who narrated the tour in both English and French. There was a little bar (Captain's Bar) next to the loading dock with drinks you could take with you on the cruise. Sipping a glass of bloody-red wine as we glided down past Eiffel and returned all the way up river to Tournelle bridge past Notre Dame made the cruise even more memorable. The web site has all the info, as well as a 2-Euro discount coupon to print out and take with you, so with the coupon it's only 9 Eu instead of 11. To get the free coupon click below and then click on top-right where it says "Internet Discount" Bateaux Vedettes Free Cruise Discount CouponUPDATE - buy online and get 4 Euros off: at this link: buy online and save 4 euros instead of printing the coupon, you buy your ticket online in advance; Print the Internet ticket in which is included your order number; then take it with you and show it to them whenever you decide to cruise. 4 Euros off of the std 11Eu cost is imo a great deal. OK, so if you may never get a shot at this, here it is in daytime and nightime: Seine cruise videos daytime or nightime I thought it was worth it and I am sure I will do it again. The Seine is the river that splits Paris in two different parts, the right bank in the north and the left bank in the south. It's lovely to stroll along the river, where you will find many bookstalls. But even better is to make a trip on one of the typical Seine boats, called bateaux mouches. As most of the important French buildings are close to the Seine, you will have a good view from the water to see them all in a relaxing way. Leave a Comment

Walking along the banks of the River Siene you will see something that grabs your attention every few minutes, you do not have to have a guide book, just rely upon your eyes and beautiful and wonderful things will appear. On the footpath you will pass many wooden stalls, many of these are the booksellers shopfronts containing many sought after books and novels from earlier years, some in English but most in French. Some stalls have other treasures such as ancient maps etc. Stop and browse, you never know what you may find and there is always space in your suitcase for that special book. Leave a Comment Address: Ile de la CiteDirections: Cross any of the bridges leading to Isle de la Cite or Isle St Louis and you will see some stalls close to the bridges.

There are very beautiful paths along the Seine, the river which crosses Paris. For instance, take the metro and go to Gare d'Austerlitz. Then find the little stair down to the paved way which follows the river towards Notre Dame (the picture). During the summer you will find many attractions, especially the evening. Many dancers like to meet there. You can practice rock (tuesday), folk dance (thursday), salsa and tango almost every night. Many others have recommended this and I have to agree. See the Seine from as many different perspectives as possible. For example start at one of the bridges and walk along rive gauche till the next bridge then cross it and walk along rive droit till the next bridge and then so one. Then you could turn around and do it in reverse direction. There's so much to see! See it from vantage points such as the Tour Eiffel or La Samaritaine or Tour Montparnasse. Also get right down to next to the water at many of the steps that lead down. Take something to read and a piece of fruit or a pastry or two to munch on and if it's a sunny day you'll be so glad you did! Leave a Comment Address: Any section you can get to relatively easilyDirections: I'd suggest the area between Pont de la Concorde (nearest Metro - Concorde on the right bank & Assemblee Nationale on the left bank)and Pont de Sully (nearest Metro - Sully Morland on the left bank).
