 | Paris La Seine and Its Bridges Reviews | 31 - 40 of 431 | | Paris is quite distinctively divided into two parts by the Seine River, which meanders through the city, bisecting the centre. Thus everything in Paris is defined as Rive Droite (Right Bank) on the north side, or Rive Gauche (Left Bank) on the south side. Both sides compete with each other in great museums, churches, monuments, shops, hotels and restaurants, while in the middle of the river, atop the L'Île de la Cité, rises the towering bulk of Notre Dame cathedral ( in the pic ), arbitrator between the two rivals Leave a Comment

Pont Neuf translates into "New Bridge". While it was a new bridge at one time, that time was about 400 years ago! These days, Vieux would be a little more accurate adjective as Pont Neuf is currently the oldest bridge on the Seine. Unfortunately, the bridge was under renovation when I visisted Paris. We snapped this photo on our first day in Paris. This is Paris' most ornate bridge. One one side, the bridge leads to les Invalides; on the other, it leads to the Grand Palais and the Petit Palais. In the photo, you can see Place de la Concorde in the background. Leave a Comment

Several companies propose cruises on Seine (1H to 1H30) for a price between 7 and 9 €. The lunch and dinner are more expensive and on my opinion, too expensive (50 to 125€) Generally, the boats go as far as the Quai Henri IV (East) and the Tour Eiffel (West). To find a boat go : - to Square du Vert Galant (Ile de la Cite) - to Quai de Montebello (Left Bank) - to Pont de l'Alma (Left bank) An idea : take the Batobus. With a 1 day ticket (10 €) you can go along the Seine and stop at the 8 stations for visiting (10AM to 7PM). Leave a Comment

The most beautiful bridge upon Siena - Alexander's III bridge. It connects the Esplanade of Invalids with Champs Elysee. The bridge is constructed in 1896-1900 and carries a name of the Russian tsar whose son Nikolay II opened the bridge. It was constructed in memory of the conclusion of the Franco-Russian agreement. Garlands of flowers, the elegant lanterns surrounded by cupids, form allegories of shipbuilding decorate the bridge. France medieval and France modern is presented at two pilons of the right coast, France of the Renaissance and France of the Lui XIV is presented at the same pilons of the left coast. As the symbol of the union of France and Russia, allegory of Sena and Neva decorate two pilons, located at an entrance of the bridge.

A cruise on the Seine is a highlight of any trip to Paris. We hopped on in the late afternoon and were able to see the sights both in the daylight and the dusk when all the lights were coming on, a perfect time to do it. The cruises can be as simple as just the boat ride or you can also do dinner cruises. It was a little cold to take a river cruise on our December 2003 trip but it appears that the boats still run in the winter as seen in this shot. Leave a Comment

Here began and finished my walk along the Seine... from there it is already possible to walk on the banks! I could already see the Cathedral Notre Dame from far away and it is close to the place where people join every night of the Summer to dance in open air (tango, salsa, lindy hop, folk dance...) This is a great way to see a number of the sight of Paris without walking. Sit and enjoy the view from the Seine. In the photo, I'm showing the original model for the Statue of Liberty, seen from the boat. Leave a Comment

This street is situated in the heart of Paris, on an Island (in the middle of the Seine river) called St Louis attached to the main island Ile de la Cité. This street is very cute with a lot of old shops and old houses... and attracts a lot of tourists! A bit history about the islands of the Seine? Here is it! The Ile de la Cité is the cradle of Parisian civilization. It was here that the Parisii tribe lived; the Romans, led by Caesar's lieutenant Labenius, conquered the Parisii in 52 AD and set up camp. The city was given the name Lutecia, from the Latin lutum meaning "mud". During the barbarian invasion, Lutecia's inhabitants, galvanized by the young Sainte Geneviève, took refuge on the easily defended Ile de la Cité. Clovis, king of the Francs and defeater of the Romans, made the island his capital. It stayed the area's center of activity throughout the Middle ages Leave a Comment

Pont Alexandre III is the most beautiful bridge on the Seine. You'll be able to identify it by the flamboyant statuary that adorns it. In the picture you can see the Grand Palace on the right bank peeking throught the trees. The Pont was built between 1896-1900 to commemorate the 1892 French-Russian Alliance. It was named after Tsar Alexander III, the father of Nicholas II. It was built so not to impede the view of the Champs Elysees or the Ivalides.
