 | Paris La Seine and Its Bridges Reviews | 41 - 50 of 431 | | La samaritaine is a big departement store build in 1900 in the Art Déco style, which was revolutionnary for the time. As I love this style, I really like this store! Climbing to the top with the wonderful stairways in ironwork is really worth because on the fourth floor you will be able to look from closer the wonderful painting of the ceiling! La Seine is an integral part of Paris. The river takes on a much greater importance that rivers in other cities. It cuts through the city splitting Paris into the Left and Right Banks. Walking along the Seine and its bridges gives you a feel for the city. It is also a very romantic destination. (Given that I was traveling solo, this didn't really apply to me!). There are also a large number of bookstalls setup along the river. One can also choose from a variety of boat tours. Leave a Comment Directions: The big river that runs through the city. You can't miss it!!!

You can pick up a local boat/taxi that takes you from one end to the other for key points to see in the immediate area of Notre Dame and going 3-4 miles. There are about 6 drop/pick up points to come and go as you please. Ticket price was around Euro 7. It takes you from Eiffel tower area to past NOtre DAme. Many boat cruises also provide lunch, and dinner with a variety of prices, depending on what and how much. It can run from 15-75 Euro. Shop around.

LE PONT NEUF I remember those I had no chance to know, the famous unknown whose names the pavements still mumble so low that none of the sacred syllables comes to hurt the poem's ear. ... The windy arches through which the bridges overlook, it is the river Seine swirling near the Pont-Neuf Beaudelaire slowly goes by, and Verlaine is smiling. Through the sleeping city, passes history. Our cruise on the Seine was an enjoyable 90 minutes, a very relaxing way of viewing the river activity, the beautiful buildings on the riverbanks and the many bridges. The cruise commenced close to Notre Dame, and continued on past the Ile de la Cite the birthplace of Paris many thousands of years ago. We saw many famous buildings including the Eiffel Tower, The Louvre, Conciergeire, some magnificent bridges and a variety of barges, ferries, pleasure boats, floating restaurants, house boats and other activities that occur on a working river. An excellent commentary accompanied the cruise. Our cruise boat was fully enclosed with a glass ceiling which made photography difficult. If doing the cruise again I would take a ferry that offered elevated outside seating on top of the cabin. The higher elevation from the water would give a better view of the buildings and give greater photographic opportunity. Also I would take a cruise from Pont Neuf as there are better ferries operating from this location. Leave a Comment

A great way to see a lot of the city without having to walk for miles is to take one of the many low-profile boats that give visitors tours of the river. The cruises give an excellent view of Notre Dame, the Eiffel Tower, and severasl other sites. Perhaps the biggest benefit of the cruises is that theypresent a very convenient and thorough way of seeing all the gorgeous bridges that cross the river. You'll still need to walk around to see a lot of the major sites, but I highly recommend a cruise anyway. For an really uniqui view of the city, take one of the cruises after dark. Paris at night is a gleaming jewel that should not be missed, especially the dazzling Eiffel Tower covered in lights. Leave a Comment

I had so wanted to take a Bateau Mouche when in Paris my 1st & 2nd trips but each time the Seine overflowed. Thus I was unable to take a Bateaux Mouche dinner cruise nor could I walk along the quais. A tad disappointing. But this February I got to do a Bateaux Mouche tour at night! It was cold but beautiful! I chose the Bateaux Mouche because it goes past the tip of Île St-Louis in one direction and then goes past the Eiffel Tower (they timed it during my trip for when the tower was sparkling - ahhh!), past the Ile des Cygnes around the small Statue of Liberty. If you've seen the Harrison Ford film Frantic then you've seen this manmade isle, the Ile de Cygnes (isle of swans) during the climax scene of the movie. The Pont Alexandre III is the most striking bridge in Paris, crossing the Seine. The bridge was named after Tsar Alexander III of Russia, who laid the foundation stone in October 1896. The bridge was built between 1896 and 1900 by the engineers Résal and Alby at the same time as the Grand Palais and Petit Palais just north of the bridge at the right bank were built. The bridge, is inaugurated in 1900 for the Exhibition Universelle. The bridge with a 6M high single span steel arch is a wonder of engineering from the late 19th century. The bridge is striking by its ornaments of exuberant art nouveau lamps, cherubs and nymphs. At the top of 17M high columns the four gold-covered bronze statues are representing winged horses. From the bridge the views at the Invalides, the Grand Palais and the Seine are spectacular. Leave a Comment

The oldest bridge - Pontus Nuef means "the new bridge". It was constructed in 1607. "New" to those times there was its design with two enormous arches. The fine panorama on Seine opens here, therefore the bridge became as though a balcony thrown through the river.
