 | Paris La Seine and Its Bridges Reviews | 51 - 60 of 431 | | Along the Seine's quais and lined up with their signature green stalls are "les bouquinistes" or the booksellers. Nowadays they sell not only old books but also souvenirs and old prints among their wares. If you have time do browse the stalls. You may find something that says "Paris" to you as a memento. It may seem like the ultimate tourist cliché, but taking a Seine River Cruise is a great way to introduce and orient yourself to Paris. In about 60 minutes you get a great perspective on this large and complex city and begin to sort out what you really want to do. To be sure, the banks of the Seine are lined with the most heavily visited tourist "hot-spots",perhaps, in the whole world. But, they are not busy because they are boring...they're busy because most of us have dreamed are whole lives of seeing them. There are several cruise lines which have staked out different departure points along the Seine...any of which will likely be fine. The cruise line we used was Les Vedettes du Pont-Neuf which departs from the west end of Ile de la Cite at the base of Pont-Neuf. The fare was 11€, however, we could have saved 4€ by purchasing our tickets online...but, it was Paris and we were "in the moment". Intro Photo: We boarded at the Pont-Neuf which, while it means "new bridge", is actually the oldest bridge in Paris. It was new, however, in 1607 when Henri IV named the span. It is said that the characterized stone faces which line its perimeter are those of Henri's critics other nay-sayers who claimed that the bridge would never last. Photo 2: This was our first view of the Eiffel Tower. In the foreground is the Pont Alexandre III which opened in 1900. It is described as the prettiest or most elegant bridge in Paris, however, I suspect that if it had been built anywhere else than in Paris it might have less charitable reviews. It is referred to as an Art Nouveau design, however I think Hector Guimard or Jules Lavirotte might have a different opinion. Photo 3: I have to admit to a certain guilty enjoyment at studying the voluptuous nymphs which adorn the center of Pont Alexandre. Photo 4: Here we pass the Musée du Louvre and the lower banks of the Seine promenade. Photo 5: At this point the Seine splits to go around Ile de la Cite and Ile St-Louis. We are about to pass under the Petit Pont which connects to the left bank. Also, of course, we are approaching Notre Dame Cathedral. Leave a Comment

Among the vast collection of wonderful bridges arching the Seine, few can dispute the ambience, the style or the setting of the Pont des Arts. The bridge itself is well-named, being a wooden promenade for pedestrians only, but also the magnet for local artists who from this simple setting can color their canvasses with the Louvre, the Institut de France, the Seine, the distant Eiffel Tower and the Ile de la Cite, all visible from this charming lovers' retreat. I really, really recommend getting a ride on one of the boats on the Seine if the weather is nice. I went with Vedettes de Pont Neuf (not the one in the pic, that is) for an hour and I think it was 10 euros or something like that. The guide spoke both french and english and it was very enjoyable. It is possible to take a Seine cruise from Paris all the way to the Atlantic Ocean, but most tourists just embark on the one hour Paris landmarks tour and conclude with a hike up to Trocadero for yet another view of the Eiffel Tower. Bateaux Parisiens is a very good company that does the Seine cruise. They are located just a few meters from the Eiffel Tower at Port de la Bourdonnais. There always seems to be room for a couple more tourists; just look at how packed this ship is in my photo. Leave a Comment

I can’t count how many times I’ve had the intention of spending fifteen minutes at the bouquinistes and finding myself four or five years later still standing there. OK, maybe not four or five years, but at least four or five hours. Vintage magazines, incredible prints, French books—every kind of paper ephemera you can imagine. The only way I ever manage to prevent myself from spending there, is to go at the beginning of the day, knowing that if I buy something I’ll have to carry it around with me all day. Sometimes even that doesn’t work. When I first went over there, I had a landlord who owed me my deposit money and didn’t have it ready by the time I had to come back to the states, so I had a friend collect it after I left, and, rather than losing money changing the francs back into dollars, I had her go to the bouquinistes, completely blow it, and then send me what she bought. To this day I have the stack of Elle magazines from the 50s she sent me. Address: All along the banks of the SeineDirections: Just walk up and down the Seine--either bank

We just took a lovely cruise along the Seine with Bâteaux Mouches. I recommend taking the departure just before sunset. It was a wonderful time to see Paris. The cruise begins at the Pont de l'Alma and heads east toward the Ile de la Cité, around the Ile St. Louis, then heads back westward past the Eiffle Tower, down to the statue of Lady Liberty and back to the docks. I recommend sitting on the upper deck on the port (left) side. This will give you the best views of Notre Dame and the islands. The cruise is narrated in French, English, Italian, Spanish and German and provides plenty of historical information. They also offer lunch and dinner cruises. We passed one of the dinner cruises and I saw lots of smiles and champagne bottles! Of course you need to take a walk by the Seine or a cruise on the river itself and watch all the beautiful bridges. This is a piece of Pont Alexandre III with it's loads of gold on it. Leave a Comment Directions: Pont Alexandre III is the last bridge before Concorde Bridge if you come from the west...

There are many boat ride companies that offer a tour of the river. When you buy your ticket make sure how far down the boat will go. I recommend taking the longest ride possible. They have different languages that will talk about what you will be seeing. You can buy snack food and drinks onboard. If it looks like it will be crowded, be sure and get in the line early to get a good seat for photos. Restrooms also onboard. They will tell you how long each tour will take. You might also want to repeat this ride at night when all the famous buildings are beautifully lit up. There is also several dinner cruises offered. More photos will come soon. Address: Near Notre Dame on the other side of the river.Directions: Go down the stairs to the river. If it is sunny you might want to wear a hat and sunglasses. The water will reflect the sunlight. If you are budget conscious, bring your water bottle.
