 | Paris Louvre Reviews | 51 - 60 of 863 | | The Louvre is undoubtedly the largest collection of art certainly in the western world. With over 300,000 pieces, you have to plan what you are going to see on each visit or just wander around open mouthed. I was particularly impressed with this 2000+ year old Greek statue. I understand that when in was found in the 19th Century that it was in about 120 pieces and was assembled at the Louvre. I also read that in 1950 a finger of the missing hand was found. This is an amazing an beautiful place not to be missed even if you have only a short time. Leave a Comment Address: Louvre MuseumDirections: In the middle of Paris.

This work of art is worth a pic coz when she was borned ...it attracted a lot of criticism as to its appropriateness in front of such a grand and classic building as the Louvre. So what do you think ? Personally I think it blends well with the environment , coz after all Pyramid is not a new architecture...but do you know that this pyramid is being built with 666 glass window ? why 666 ? go figure it out ( its mentioned in the Da Vinnci Code ) Its thru this pyramid that you will enter the museum, once you go down , there are 3 entrances which leads to different wings namely Richelieu, Denon and Sully. NOTE - try to take Metro and stop at Louvre Rivoli and from there you will get straight to the lobby of the 3 entrances ( you skipped the long queue outside the museum ) . Remember its Metro Station Louvre Rivoli not Metro Station Palais Royal - Musee de Louvre ! Leave a Comment

Located at the 1st floor in Richelieu wing, Napoleon III Apartments display an opulent decor dominated by red velvet. The Apartments consist in an antechamber, a presentation hall, a salon-theatre, a great hall, a boudoir and a small and a large dining hall with a huge sideboard in ebonized wood. In one of the rooms it is also exhibited Napoleon’s throne. Directions: M: Palais Royal-Musée du Louvre

The Egyptian antiquities section in Louvre includes 19 galleries with numerous statues and objects dating from the ancient Egypt. Furniture, clothes, pottery, statues of gods and goddesses, jewels are all exhibited in different rooms according to the theme and period (e.g. Agriculture, hunting and fishing or Nagada period). Remarkable is the vaulted gallery presenting painted death marks, shrouds and a mummy from the Roman Period. Directions: Métro: Palais Royal-Musée du Louvre

Louvre Museum was established in 1793 by the French Republic and is therefore one of the first museums. The building which houses the museum is actually a medieval fortress, the palace of the kings of France. The museum is divided into 7 departments. The Louvre collections incorporate works dating from the birth of the great antique civilisations all the way to the first half of the 19th century. There are several temporary collections of which you can find more information from the website. If you want to see the all, you'll have to spend a whole week in Louvre! Give it a day and what you see is just a little scratch on everything this museum has to offer. Two of the probably best known artwork in Louvre will be presented as their own tips because I think they deserve it... There are several entrances, the main entrance being via the Pyramid, which you can see in the photo. TIP #1: You can buy your ticket online and get in without queueing. TIP #2: Admission is free without ticket for all visitors on the first Sunday of each month and on 14th July (Bastille Day), except for the exhibition at the hall Napoléon. Leave a Comment

The Louvre... one of the most important museums in the world. Its collection rank amongst the finest ever. Once the royal palace for almost eight centuries, the palace is over 800 years old and one of the biggest museums ever. It holds 350,000 works in total, 35,000 on display, eight departments (Oriental, Egyptian, Greek, Etruscan and Roman antiquities, Paintings, Sculpture, Art Objects, Islamic Art and Graphics), collections dating from the great ancient civilizations of the Mediterranean to those from the first half of the 19th century. The Mona Lisa, the Venus de Milo and the Dying Slave are some of the many treasures it holds. To see it completely is imposibble: just pick one or two departments and enjoy. If you've got more time, maybe three, but don't expect to see all of it in 1 or 2 days. Concentrate on what you like. Open dayly 9am to 6pm, except Tuesdays Late openings Mondays and Wednesdays until 9:45pm. First Sunday of the month is for free. The Nike (Winged Victory) of Samothrace is one of the Louvre's greatest treasures and is displayed at the head of the Daru Staircase in dramatic fashion. It was reconstructed at the Louvre from over 100 fragments discovered by a French ambassador Champoiseau on the island of Samothrace in 1863. The head and arms remain missing, the hand discovered later lies in an adjacent case. This epic 8 ft. statue stands atop the prow of a ship and is believed to commemorate a Rhodes naval victory in the 2nd C. BC. The statue is of semitranslucent marble and the power of the work is in the drapery clinging to the arched body of Nike, the Greek goddess of Victory. It's so hard to choose the right words to describe the Louvre. From the standpoint of someone who only has a casual appreciation of art, I thought it was fantastic. So much to see, so many famous paintings and sculptures. We spent one full day trying to take in as much as we could but we really only saw a small percentage of all the exhibits. I do have to say that I was surprised by the number of people who only go in to see the Mona Lisa and the Venus De Milo. I guess to each their own. I think it is a must see if you really want to experience Paris. Directions: Métro: Palais Royal-Musée du Louvre

VENUS OF MILO One of the unpriced wonders inside Louvre Museum it's this Venus of Milo, by an unknown author of the Greek classical period. I was looking forward to see it from close distance. Nobody ever know in what position were her hands. The 2,05 meters tall statue is supposed to be made somewhere arround the year 150 bc. It was recovered in 1820 from the Aegean island of Melos by one peasant named Yorgos. The sculpture represents Aphrodite, the greek deity of love and beauty. Venus was it's counterparty for the Roman classical period. Leave a Comment

The Arc du Carrousel, copied from the Arch of Septimus Severus in Rome, was built in 1806-8. The 6 bas-reliefs are of Napoleon's victories in 1805 campaigns. On the top of the Arc was placed the four bronze horses "borrowed" from St. Mark's in Venice and "returned" in 1815 so the ones seen on top today are replicas. Before it became a name for a merry go round, Carrousel was a name for a knight's tournament. Leave a Comment Address: Place du Carrousel, near the Louvre
