 | Paris Montmartre / Sacré Coeur Reviews | 41 - 50 of 678 | | I stepped of the night train in Paris at 9am and by 9:30 I was at Sacre Coeur and what a wonderful introduction to Paris! I managed to dodge the people trying to sell me stuff (when I say sell I actually mean almost literally try to force me to buy something) and walked up to see the monument close up. I would reccomend the walk and not take the cable car because it is not too hard and gives you more time to admire the buliding. If you get tired, no problem, stop and rest with one of the best views imaginable. Apart from the beautiful building itself, you can also climb to the top of the dome for incredibly beautiful views of Paris (it is just a shame the Basilica itself is not in the skyline!). Basilica: open daily 7am-11pm Leave a Comment

This fairly new basilica (started in 1875 and completed in 1914) is absolutely beautiful. It is the highlight of Montmartre and must be visited if you are in this area! The dome offers panoramic views of up to 30 km. Inside is the worlds largest mosaic depicting Christ with outstretched arms. Be sure to stop next door and see St.-Pierre de Montmarte, one of the oldest churches in Paris. The walk can be tiring as you not only have to walk up the hill, but MANY stairs. If this isn't for you (or your child) - take the funicular! Leave a Comment Directions: Metro Anvers (line 2) Chateau Rouge (line 4) Abbesses (line 12)

The Montmartre hill combines the grandiose of the Sacre-Coeur Catholic Basilica, which is situated on the very top of the hill, and the charm of the Bohemian Place du Tertre. This hill still has a very unique atmosphere that constantly attracts tourist from all around the world. The Place du Tertre lies in the heart of Montmartre, and is famous for its painters that are willing to draw a portrait of you on the spot! Walk away from this busy part of the hill, and check out at random the different parts of the Montmartre and you will surely discover old houses, gardens, steep streets and stair-cases and magnificent views of the city of Paris. Note that, although the painters of the Place du Tertre remind us of the older generation of brilliant painters like: Picasso, Monet, and Van Gogh…These are far from being penniless ;-) They will take anything from 30-50 euros for a 10-20 minute sketch. Sacré Coeur(Sacred Heart) Basilica sits on top of a hill, it's white against a backdrop of deep blue sky. It's much more of a functioning church than the over rated and tourist mobbed, Nortre Dame. You can go inside the church, but no photos are permitted. After walking around the shops, cafes and restaurants in Montmartre, walk up the steps either directly in front of or to the right of the church. Either way you choose is a good exercise. If your unable to walk the stairs, there is cable car on the left side when your facing the front of the hill and church. A lot of illegal street merchants set up shop in front of or on the hill selling mostly useless junk. From time to time they are sent scattering when a police car approaches. It's quit funny watching all them simultaneously bundle there stuff in there blankets as they run for cover. Leave a Comment

My personal opinion, the best religious architecture in Paris, beating Notre Dame, augmented by its superb location and the magnificent view down below. Plus, the narrow winding cobble-stone streets at the rearside of the church with all its nice small pubs, restaurants and charming souvenir stores. Best to visit this from the afternoon to see the magnificent view and wait for the sunset. Sit on the stairs right at the foot of the church and hum-along with people strumming guitar singing Axel Rose's famous songs. Serenity at its best. Address: 35 rue de Chevalier, Montmartre | Place du ParvisPhone: 33 1 53.41.89.00Directions: It's a 10-15 min. walk from Lamarck-Caulaincourt metro. However, you can also get down at Abbesses or Anvers and take a little walk. I suggest the Abbesses though.Website: http://www.sacre-coeur-montmartre.com/

Picasso at the Bateau-Lavoir by Ken Whitmore All life superbly for the taking cobbled square swaying shade of chestnut trees green iron fountain trickling silver sky so blue I can't name it but I'll mix it later a worker clatters over the cobbles singing steep squares of Monmartre tilt like decks of wrecks with whirligigs of streets thin honey houses stroke the sky dried blood shutters with ribcage slats black squiggle balconies At dawn I climb the thousand twisting steps of Sacre Coeur drink the matchstick city with toy tin tower who could see this sight and still be sad? I do not know why, we left it for the final, and at the end there was a reason... again KISMET! We meet with our friends Rochelle, Christian, Yelena and her boyfriend to cheer with Champaign for Christians birthday at Sacre Court. We visited the Basilique with them and had some lunch. Later we met for the Ole España!!! The Basilique was the first thing we saw of Paris when we arrived from the transfer bus, and nearly our last goodbye to the city. Even if I do not agree on the way they sell the churches (yes I said SELL .... as I do not quite understand how shops can be inside a church, but I guess is different mentality) this is one of the most beauties of Paris Leave a Comment

Did you know that after the Eiffel Tower, the Sacre Coeur Basilica is the highest point of Paris. Before you go inside, look up at the facade. You will notice two equestrian statues. The one on the left is Louis the Saint, and on the right Jeanne d'Arc. In the middle, you can see a statue of Christ. I was really amazed by the beauty on the inside of the church. I liked this church very much, even more than the Notre Dame. Don't miss it! This charming house dates from the 17th century and used to be the home of the actor Claude de la Rose, a member of the Moliere theater. Nowadays, it's a museum where you can see more about the history of Montmartre, especially the Bohemian life. Open: Tue-Sunday; 11-18h Leave a Comment Address: 12 Rue CortotDirections: Montmartre Metro station: Lamarck-Caulaincourt Metro line: 12

Well think again. Cos a small vineyard like this in Monmartre area can produce up to 2000 bottle of red wines...the man who is plucking the grapes told us. And there are about 20 types of grapes in the place and Romain who is skilled in preparation and tasting of wine told me you can actually prepare white wine with red grapes. ...hmmm...at least I know a little more abt wine now ....
