Musée d'Orsay: Appreciating Art for Beginners
  • Tip Rating:
  • Among the museums that I have visited, I found this one especially interesting. This was also where I first fell in love with impressionist art, especially the works of Camille Pisaro.

Oh, and being a lover of dance, that was where I got to know the works of Edgar Degas, whose painting shows ballerinas at practice.

Being quite a cheapskate and on a really tight budget, I would choose not to pay for the guided tours, but quietly mingle with the groups that has guides explaining the paintings. Well, I would prefer that because it gives you the flexibility of understanding the pantings which you really are interested in.

Be prepared to spend a whole day, and prepare to queue.

Being someone who has never really been exposed to art before, I think this place is a good start. It's not too big a musuem and you will not be lost for directions if you want to get out). Fill your senses!

If time is a constraint, this is where you should visit, rather than exploring museums that take days to cover. The entrance fee is reasonably priced too.

    Musée d'Orsay: Musee d'Orsay
  • Tip Rating:
  • This is the second great museum of Paris, after the Louvre. But while the former houses a massive art collection spanning several millennia, the Musee d'Orsay is home to an equally massive collection of art from around 1840 to the early 20th Century. Here, in a rennovated rail station dating to the early 20th century, you can find numerous works by Manet, Monet, Van Gogh, Renoir, Cezanne and other great artists of the era. There is a restaurant and a cafeteria inside this sprawling building that houses its collection on several floors. A definite must for any conneusier of the arts.

Musée d'Orsay: You'll Recognize Something on Every Wall
  • Tip Rating:
  • This museum was our little gem. On Thursday evenings it is open until 9:45pm. We arrived in Paris on a very rainy day and decided to go here to stay dry. If you are a fan of Impressionistic Art, this place can be like heaven for you. Famous pieces by Monet, Degas, Seurat, Van Gough, and others are on display. Famous works in the collection include: Monet's "Waterlillies," Whistler's "Mother," Van Gogh's self-portrait, and many more. The "Orsay" is not as well known as the Louvre, therefore, you might not find as many crowds here. We spent a few hours here, but for a short trip, you can spend a shorter time and still get a lot out of it. The museum has a reduced price for youths (under 26) and has a restaurant and cafeteria.

    Musée d'Orsay: Musee d'Orsay
  • Tip Rating:
  • Art of the 19? and 20? centuries : painting, sculpture, architecture, photography, furniture.
Do not forget to get a free map of the museum at the entrance.
The building was initially a railway station and not a museum. So it is easy to be lost.
I went a Sunday morning at 9:30AM, no line, no payment. When I left the museum at the end of the morning, there was a line but it was still free because it was the first Sunday of the month of February.
Open daily : 10AM to 6PM except Thursday 9:45. Close on Monday.
    Price : 7? except on Sunday : 5?
(first Sunday of the Month = free).

If you have little time in Paris and only have time to visit one museum, Musee D'Orsay is it! People say the Louvre but it'll take you weeks to get through everything. Musee D'Orsay is worth the time and money to see anyway.

I am a huge impressionist lover so my goals were to see works by Monet and Van Gogh primarily. There are beautiful works by Manet, Renoir, Cezanne and Sisely as well.

The museum is a renovated trainstation and quite popular. There were some lines but it wasn't too much of a wait.

    A must-see!!!

Musée d'Orsay: D'Orsay - my favorite museum in Paris
  • Tip Rating:
  • Musee D'Orsay is my favorite museum in Paris. The scale is perfect and the building is magnificent. It is just right! If you find the Louvre overwhelming, you will love the D'Orsay. The photo is of Pompon's Polar Bear. You can find the Polar Bear in Dijon too - in the Jardin D'Arcy and at the Musee des Beaux Arts. The other photos are of another favorite sculpture at the D'Orsay. The first is of the full scupture; the second is a close-up of the face. You can actually SEE a veil over her face. Amazing!

Musée d'Orsay: Van Gogh, Renoir, Matisse and many more.
  • Tip Rating:
  • This museum houses some of greatest works of art created between 1840 and 1914. Even though most visitors would prefer to go the upper level of the museum to see the works of impressionists and post impressionists like Van Gogh, Monet, Manet Matisse and many more, I suggest you visit the whole museum. Some of the works may not be as famous, but that doesnt make them by any bit less attractive. Tickets cost about 7 euros and are valid for the whole day. You can always leave and come back later in the day if u had something urgent to do.

Musée d'Orsay: Not a "stuffy" museum!
  • Tip Rating:
  • We found the Orsay a very unstuffy museum. Just the thing for traveling with children. The main rooms have statues all about and you are actually allowed to get close and maybe touch. Don't try that in the US! We met a French architecture student who was sketching statues and he did a quick sketch of my granddaughter.

I would have liked to have spent more time there but as always there is so much to see and so little time. I think I added this in another tip, but when we were leaving the museum, the uniformed doorman knelt down and buttoned my granddaughter's coat for her. Ohhh those French men can be so charming! :)

    Musée d'Orsay: Impressionist Museum
  • Tip Rating:
  • When you are in Paris you should visit The Musée d'Orsay. At first this was a train station called the old Gare d'Orsay built by Victor Lalouxand for the Universal Exhibition in Paris in 1900. In 1939, after having received the first electric trains, the station was forced to close. In December 1986 it was reopened as the Impressionist Museum. It holds work of arts from 1848 through 1914. Here you can see some of the masterpieces like "Ball at the Moulin de la Galette" by Auguste Renoir, "Olympia" and "Dejeuner sur l'herbe" by Manet, "The Dancing Lesson" by Edgar Degas, "The Siesta" by Vincent Van Gogh...
