After a day of sightseeing on my own, I had agreed to meet my friends at Notre Dame at six in the evening. I was tired & stressed by the time I reached the front of the amazing cathedral. But when I walked inside, there was the coolness of the air and the soothing sounds of a children's choir, their young, gentle voices singing a beautiful song. I immediately felt the stress and tiredness lifting & I felt a joyful serenity. The next photo shows the children's choir. Leave a Comment

Notre Dame Cathedral is one of the most famous buildings in Paris built between 1163-1345. Situated on the river Seine, it is probably best known for the story of the Hunchback of Notre Dame. When we were there we didn’t see Quasimodo or Esmaralda but we did hear the bells! It’s a lovely old Cathedral and worth a look round even if you’re not into churches. Have a walk by the river Seine and look at the stalls selling old books and pictures. There are also a lot of good bars and restaurants close by in the latin quarter just over the bridge, very pleasant in the evening. Leave a Comment

Pâques 'Twas my final day in Paris and I'd saved one of the best things for last: Easter Mass at Notre Dame. "Le Christ est vraiment ressuscité, Alléluia!" Go early (around 8:30am) and stand in line to get into the church for the Pâques (Easter) Ceremony at Notre Dame. I was the 1st inside and I sat in the front row! The service was just beautiful and spoken in Latin, French & English. I am not Catholic so I followed what everyone else did and I did not partake of the Communion (although I am Christian, but I thought that might be rude as I'm sure they'd want me to have had my confession done by a priest – and it wasn't). Triva: The word Pâques means Easter derived from the Latin & Greek word Pascha. (but you probably already knew that) ;) Photo: April 2003 Leave a Comment

Notre Dame de Paris is one of the world's most famous examples of gothic architecture. More than 700 years old, the cathedral is also known to people worldwide as the setting for Victor Hugo's masterpiece "The Hunchback of Notre Dame." It was here that Napoléon crowned himself emperor, and then crowned Joséphine as his empress. Notre Dame is a huge and imposing landmark in Paris and an absolute must-see while you are in the city. The interior of Notre Dame is vast and impressive, with towering ceilings and ornate details in every direction. For a look at the upper parts of the cathedral, the Siene, and a great view of Paris, climb the 387 steps to the top of one of the towers. The south tower holds Notre-Dame's 13-ton bell, which is rung on special occasions. Leave a Comment

but even the most die-hard agnostics will feel something inside Notre Dame, especially if they're around for vespers, or any other service. You also don't have to know French to know haunting acoustics, a grandiose organ that has a power to reverberate your every cell, and if you get a chance to hear a choir or even a soloist, it's beautiful. Many people walk around the cathedral, take some pictures, glance at the stained glass windows and walk out. Give yourself about 10 minutes to just sit, look up, meditate, and feel this place. Notre Dame has always been treated as another tourist site (can't miss the Cafe Quasimodo up the street), but it truly is the soul of Paris. The cathedral Notre Dame is one of the most magnificent achievements of Gothic architecture ever built. Construction was completed in 1345. It can accommodate over 6,000 worshippers. It has some lovely stained glass windows inside and I believe you can also go up the towers, which we did not do as we had already seen views of Paris from the Eiffel Tower and Sacre Coeur. In the center of Paris on the Ile de la Cite, it's architecture and history have been talked about in so many books and movies, you just gotta go see it. But spend some time there...there is apparently more to be discovered. Sure the architecture is beautiful and famous, the stained glass as well but apparently there is also a nice park behind the cathedral where you can get the best view of the flying butresses. I, myself, will be going back some day for a closer look. Leave a Comment

Notre Dame Cathedral is one of the most beautiful gothic cathedrals in Europe. This cathedral houses one of the Pietas. We went to the cathedral in December and there was a beutiful display of a life sized Nativity. Like all history teachers preach, Notre Dame houses a beautiful array of flying butresses. Take the time to view them outside the church before you move on to see the artists and souvenir shops that surround the cathedral. Leave a Comment
