 | Paris Notre Dame de Paris Reviews | 61 - 70 of 812 | | You can climb 386 stairs of the North Tower to get a view from the church. It offers a great view and photo opportunities but I must warn you that they did not stick to their posted schedule when we were there. They did not open on time and closed early. Read the signs, but talk to the person tending the line as they would know what's going on. One afternoon we wanted to go up and decided to use the restrooms first. By the time we came out of the restroom, the tower was closed at 4:15PM Leave a Comment

This is another activity that is a must-do for me every trip! Isn't this bell just huge? I'd hate to be in the same room when the bell is tolling. Combined with a trip up the towers of Notre Dame this is one of the best things to do in Paris. Besides just doing the long climb it's fun to notice the old architecture while climbing the steps; you can feel the worn down nature of the ancient limestone steps and see how old the leaded mullioned windows are with their wavering view. And that guy in the photo? He'll be happy to take yours if you'd like. Photos: March 2001 & April 2003 Leave a Comment

As impressive as Notre Dame is on the outside, the inside is utterly amazing. The ceilings, the stained glass windows, the paintings, the statues. Each with it's own story to tell. When you see something that grabs your fancy, stop and reflect on it for a while. Think of all that's gone on here, the people who've worshipped here. One thing I found interesting is that there are no pews there that I saw. The faithful seem to worship in chairs. It must be quite an experience to hear Mass in this place. Picture taking is permitted while Mass isn't being celebrated, though do be respectful of where you are. Notre Dame is still very much a working church. Leave a Comment

The Cathedral of Our Lady of Paris - a standard of French tourism. A beautiful location to spend an afternoon (in the gardens behind the church or wandering around inside.) Notre Dame is the most visited site in Paris with 10 million people visiting each year. The exterior is French Gothic architecture - but the site the church is built on was actually dedicated to the Roman god Mithra a millennium before. Although badly damaged after the Revolution, it was renovated between 1845 and 1864. Note that many of the saints inside the church portals are actually modern day copies. As trite as it may sound, I found the Notre Dame to be very beautiful and breathtaking. I know many people consider it to be a tourist trap, but I loved seeing the exterior buttresses and the interior glass windows. I must admit that one of my favorite things I brought back from Paris was a candle from Notre Dame. Although there are tea lights throughout the church that can be lit for various saints, wait until you reach the center of the church. There are candles in plastic jars (about 3 inches high) with the Virgin Mary on the front that can be acquired for a suggested donation of 5 Euro. Hours are 8am-6:45pm Monday-Friday, 8am-7:45pm, Saturday-Sunday. The information desk is open 10am-5:30pm Monday-Saturday. To visit the church is free but audioguides are 5 Euro. There are free guided tours of the church in English at noon on Wednesday and Thursday and 2:30pm on Saturday. Leave a Comment

The former bishop of Paris, Maurice de Sully decided to build a new church for the growing population of the city in 1163. About 180 years later the Notre Dame was finished: in the year 1345. Because in these days illiteracy was very normal, al the stories were told by paintings, glass and sculptures in the Notre Dame. If you take a look at these images you immediately understand why the constuction took so long. The church from the outside is abviously Gothic. All the time people are cleaning the walls. When the walls are freshly cleaned, the white of the stone is really beautiful, but when the walls are black of pollution, you can always come back at nicht, when the church is wonderfully lighted. In front of the Notre Dame you´ll find a cupper plate in the pavement. This is the centerpoint of France. From here every distance in the country is measured. Leave a Comment

Notre Dame is a fully functioning church still, so be mindful when touring. You can pay to climb the stairs to the top, to see the gargoyles and the square below. Be careful, the staircase is narrow and still the original and now-worn stone. The day we climbed, it had rained earlier, and the staircase was a little slippery from trodden-in water. The symbol of medieval Paris : the story of Notre Dame and the hunchback Quasimodo Saint Etienne basilica was already an old building when it became the cathedral of Paris in the 10th century Once here it is more than worthed to visit and climb by foot the 422 steps to the "Galerie des chimères" - bodyguards against evil and scénary of the story by Victor Hugo BTW : With the Paris Museum Pass the entrance to the towers is free of charge. Most people tend to miss the archeological crypt when they visit the Notre Dame, and it's really easily done. Just about 100 metres in front of the Notre Dame Church you'll find a staircase leading down to the archeological crypt where they keep excavations of both the roman city, about 2000 years old and of the mideval Paris. The remnants are left as they we're found and there are large signs describing what you look at. You will fins old roads, houses, parts of a 2000 year old harbour etc etc. It's a gold mine for anyone interested in Archeology and history. The entrance fee is just 3,30 Euro and if you walk slowly through the "exhibition" it'd take you about an hour to see it all. Leave a Comment Directions: The entrance is just in front of the Notre Dame church, on île de la cité.

I have vowed to go back to Nortre Dame with more time and more information, but there is so much to see there, it might take a lifetime. This is a magnificent altar with great sculpture on top in one of the chapels along the side of the Cathedral. Leave a Comment
