 | Paris Versailles Reviews | 51 - 60 of 249 | | Château de Versailles and its gardens Royal residence, the most sumptuous building in Europe... and I guess in the world. I remember hearing a tour guide close to me say that from the central window, at the king's room, Louis XVI and Marie-Antoinette stood by the balcony, seeing the crowd invade the palace. It was quite a feeling to stand there, at the very same place, imagining the situation. Leave a Comment

Take a look at one of the most famous Palaces of the world - it is just like in fairytales! An all-inclusive ticket for a day costs 20 EUR - and you need a day for sightseeing and the huge gardens. It is a big park where they play classic music when the fountain show starts - very nice! Leave a Comment

These fountains are very famous and you dont want to miss it, after going all the way to see the palace. Since there is a separate entrance fee for the gardens. The fountains are in operation for 2/3 times a day....at 11:00am and 3:00pm during the srping. The inner ones goes for only 45 minutes and the outer ones for 1 hour, so first try to walk around the musical fountains on the inside and then see the outer ones. Dont miss these.... 'The Latona Fountain', which is the very first one on the center - It illustrates the legend of the mother Diana and Apollo protecting her children against the insults of the peasants of Lycia and demanding vengeance of jupiter, changing them in frog. Surrounded by the Lizard Fountain, the Latona Fountain, constructed under Louis XIII, was modies by J.H. Mansart between 1687 & 1689. 'The Fountains of Apollo's Chariot' - The Apollo's chariot, dug under the reign of Louis XIII and fitted out under Louis XIV who had the magnificient group represent "Apollo on his Chariot" installed, later created by Tuby from drawings by Lebrun. 3 majestic fountains rise from this pool, the central jet reaching a height of 20 meters. And other fountains - Neptune Fountain Leave a Comment

The Grand Apartment (Grand Appartement du Roi) 'And since the Sun is the emblem of the King, seven planets were taken to serve as the subject of the paintings of the seven salons of this apartment' (Félibien des Avaux, 1674). The Grand Apartment glorified the Sun King. A room known as the Abundance Salon led to other salons_Venus, Diana, Mars, Mercury, and Apollo_each dedicated to a heavenly body. That is why they were originally called the Apartment of the Planets when the New Chateau was being built. In 1710, another salon was added, this time dedicated to the mythological hero

We got our tickets for the chateau at the SNCF train station; there was a package deal with the round trip ticket from Paris. This saved us a lot of time in the ticket line once we got to the the chateau! An audioguide is included in the cost, and provides basic information on the chapel, the rooms of the king and queen, public rooms, and the Hall of Mirrors. One needs to try to steer clear of the many guided tours going through the chateau. These are lead by loud-mouthed tour guides that can drown out the audioguide completely. Plan plenty of time to explore the chateau and the estates - I would give it AT LEAST two days! The area of the castle and estate are so large and varied in feel (although always elegant) that one can suddenly imagine how the French royalty of the 15th and 16th centuries managed to spend their lives here without becoming either bored or stir crazy...... This is a definite must see. Over 300 years of history demands it!

This is a elegant palace with symmetrically planned gardens of the French King Louis 14th and his Queen Marie Antoinette. The tour will cover the hall of mirrors where balls and dances with wigs and pertume was the fashion until the Parisian poor revolted out of hunger, leading to the guilotine of French royal blood and the French revolution. Great place to step back into the French Royal court.

On the day Renee and I visited Versailles, only a part of the building was opened to public and I we had to stand in line for more than a hour to go inside. (so we did not) But the gardens and building itself were a joy for my eyes to see. Louis XIV really found himself a great place to escape the hectic live in Paris! Opening hours Versailles: Chateau Opens at: 9:00 AM Closes at: 6:30 PM Park Opens at: 7:00 AM Leave a Comment

This is a really enjoyable day trip from Paris if you go early. Also make sure you know which train you're supposed to be on, otherwise you'll end up on the other side of Paris! Versailles is actually outside Paris to the south-west. The train stops in the town of Versailles and it is a short walk to the huge palace. Be prepared to queue. What I didn't find out until I got there and had to pick between two queues, was that the entrance you take will dictate what you see inside. I instinctively went for the one that mentioned the Hall of Mirrors, as that is what I really wanted to see. This entrance (I think it was entrance A), allows you to walk through the State Apartments and the Hall of Battles (which I found interesting). The other entrance (C) takes you to the Royal Apartments and a brief walkthrough on one (cordoned off) side of the famous Hall of Mirrors. Not fully realising that at the time, I would on hind-sight perhaps recommend the latter, which does allow you to see the Hall of Mirrors - as the State Apartments aren't really very exciting. Obviously if you had the time to go back out and join the queue to the other entrance, that would allow you to see just about everything. The gardens of the Palace are extensive and I was annoyed to learn later (after getting back to my hotel actually), that I had missed the Trianon palaces and the Queen's cottage thing way down the back of the grounds. Entry to the gardens is free and it is an enjoyable walk past fantastic sculptures and wide pools. The restaurant at the palace is expensive (I unitentionally ate beef without thinking about the French BSE problem and only remembered at the end after thinking that it had been ages since I had had Lasagne! - ooops). If you can wait till you get into the town, there are plenty of places there to eat (though they're probably not much cheaper). Leave a Comment Directions: Versailles is about 30 minutes by train to the SW of Paris. I think the fare is FF150 one way and the train you need is C5. Check the timetables in the station carefully.
