 | Paris Versailles Reviews | 61 - 70 of 249 | | Don't miss a trip to Versaille. I recommend you go on a Sunday as not only can you visit the Palace, but if you walk a short walk from the palace into the town there is a market. When we went there was a traditional oompah loompah band playing music and there were stalls selling fruit and vegetables. There was also a stall which sold nothing but lots of different types of mushrooms, stalls selling all the different types of cheeses and stalls selling sausages and pate. When we bought something and they found out we were English they put extra goodies in our bag for nothing. I got some sausage and some fruit extra. I was really please with how nice and friendly they were compared to when we in the heart of Paris where the people seemed very rude and unfriendly. On the way down to the market place there were also lots of little shops like teddybear shops and antique shops etc. Directions: Walk straight down to the bottom of the huge palace car park where the brasseries are located and follow the road behind them. If memory serves me right you turn right down a street where there are grocery shops and go down a side street.

Anyone who knows a little bit of the history of French Royalty will know the Versailles palace. Therefore, rather than writing about its history let me just write about my trip there. I find it the most elegant palace complex in the world. Combination of the building itself, the gardens, the furnishing and the history makes it a truly magnificent place. I went there as a part of a tour from Amsterdam so we had a Dutch speaking guide with us. Unless you know the history and the story of the palace really well I suggest you get a (real or electronic) guide. The halls of mirrors were amazing, so were the King's and Queen's chambers. One peculiar thing I found about the chambers was that they were not in the shapes of rectangle but long and narrow. Not sure whether they had always been like that or that the furnitures were moved around to facilitate tourists whisking by. We probably spent in total 2 hours in there, and we took the bus from the city center. I've been told the RER journey takes only about 35 minutes. The palace is open on Tuesdays-Sundays from 9am to 5.30pm and in the summer months until 6.30pm Admission costs 20 Euro's during the summer months and 16 Euro's otherwise

Not great to do on a hot summer's day as much walking is involved and dehydration is a problem! Versailles is a beautiful little village, but the prices are absolutely atrocious due to one tiny factor. This is where the Versailles Palace is. Famous for housing Marie Antoinette, it attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. You cannot miss this! The grounds are beautiful, you can go rowing on the lakes and see where Marie Antoinette used to walk. I didn't actually go inside the palace, but I have heard only wonderful things about it. These fantastic gardens have been copied hundreds of times all over Europe and maybe worldwide. Every duke wanted to have something similar to these spectacular gardens. I think in Hannover in my hometown they did a quite good copy ...;-) say this without too much regional patriotism... a beautiful part of the garden are the water music events when some fountains "dance" with the music. Most people say Versailles can be done in half a day - I beg to differ. Factor in the slow moving lines inside the Palace, and all the walking and it will take a whole day. We set aside half day for Versailles and could not see the King's Chambers or the Petit Trianon, forget walking any part of the grounds. Leave a Comment

No one knows how much it cost to build Versailles; Louis XIV burned the accounts to keep the price a mystery. But you can probably assume that his gardners (hopefully) were paid well. The gardens as well as the castle itself is absolutly breath taking. Take the option of the carriage ride around the grounds unless you plan on spending 2 days there just exploring the gardens. Being in the castle you can still hear the music that must have been played at one of the Sun Kings grand parties. The decor is extravagant in a way that is no longer representative of this era, but you can gather from the scale of wealth of the palace itself, the sheer force of ego which built it. Everyone visiting France for the first time wants to see the stupendous palace of Versailles that helped bankrupt the entire country and bring on the French Revolution, yet few seem aware of l'Hameau de Marie Antoinette, the charming hamlet that exists within the grounds (a little walk of 1 mile so allow enough time!). There is a train that will take you there, but why do that when you can get some good exercise after all those rich pasteries and cheese. Leave a Comment Other Contact: 'l'Ha

The chateau was built for Louis XIII. The palace was raided during the French Revolution, but has supposedly been restored to its original state (although I am sure that they have forgotten to return half of the furniture!). The gardens were the most interesting part of our trip. They are beautifully landscaped with some spectacular fountains and statues. This is another World Heritage Site and is best known for the many treaties that have been signed there. It wasn't one of my favourite places. We felt that we had to go to say that we'd seen it and managed to get around in 20 minutes! I have to say that one of the reasons I didn't enjoy the tour inside was because it was so crowded. You are probably better goibg at opening time. Entry to the Chateau costs 7.50 Euros. Open 9am - 6.30pm from April to October, otherwise 5.30pm the rest of the year. Closed Mondays. We did not have much time to visit the Gardens surrounding the Chateau or the town of Versailles having spent almost an entire afternoon in the palace itself. The Gardens pictured here were the work of landscape architect Andre le Note. There are innumerable fountains and artificial ponds drawing their water supply from an extensive system of underground resevoirs and aqueducts. The fountains are constructed so that the water appears still to the observer - another ego-trip for the Sun King, indicating his power over the forces of nature, specifically to bring flowing water to a halt. Behind the gardens lie the two Trianon palaces, constructed as private residences for the royalty away from the main building. Two images of the surrounding village depict a quaint town probably well worth exploring - maybe we'll get back someday. Leave a Comment
