 | Paris Dining and Drinking Reviews | 11 - 20 of 38 | | The price of dining out in Paris can be astronomical : escargots, truffles and Fois gras don't come cheap in life. Even the restaurants (such as the tons around the Latin quarter) which seemed to offer a reasonable 'fixed' price menu will inevitably find a legal way to 'bump up' the bill. The price of drinks is the most obvious extra with a half-litre costing up to a 10 euro note, and a carafe of wine twice that. Restaurants also add 'service', 'cover charge', 'chefs booze fund' or 'tax' on as well - and you have little way of knowing if they are being reasonable. And that is all before they start sniffing for a tip.
Read the menu carefully, and ask for prices that are not marked !
Stick to take-away outfits, or eat in less touristy place. A chinese out at La Defense for example will be cheap in comparison, and without those dreaded 'extras. Leave a Comment

Bear in mind that prices on Montmartre are twice as higher as at its foot. Of course it is tempting to have a lunch in the famous Montmartre cafe 'A La Mere Catherine', but... it IS expensive! Leave a Comment

You must know there are generally 2 or 3 prices in a café or a bar: 1/ bar, comptoir (the cheapest price, but often w/o any chair) 2/ salle (you have a table and a chair, and can stay for hours) 3/ terrace (you can seat outside), very expensive in the touristic areas, but it's so nice in summer ATTENTION and sometimes, there is a fee after 9pm... Examples of prices for one expresso café (in 2003-2006): 1/ 1 to 2 Euros 2/ 2 to 4 Euros 3/ 4 to 7 Euros, it's sometimes the price for a small lunch in Paris !!!!!
IMPORTANT You must always watch your values (cell, money, ipod, iphone, etc...) and your bags when you are at the terrasse or in the metro Mostly if you sit near the door !!! Some "french" boys are very very fast to catch your purse then run away .... .
Bring few cash with you, just enough for each day. You can buy some drink, ice cream, cakes then go to the Luxembourg Garden. FREE SEATS Many chairs are available, it's like at Bryant Park - NYC, and there are music concerts in summer (week-end) at 10am and 2pm. or walk along the Seine river or on the Island (Ile de la cite). If you are travelling on a budget, then don't eat at restaurants where the famous sights are, or on busy well-known streets, like Rue de Rivoli or Champs Elysees, because the prices are sky high, so try find a side street where they will serve food just as good! In the popular tourist areas (e.g. Next to Notre Dam) there will be busy and bustling coffee shops. We jumped off the metro and headed into one for a quick coffee before we visited Notre Dam. On arrival the extremely over friendly waiter took our order for coffee. We told him we wanted two coffees. He reiterated to us - oui, two large coffees. we didn't click, he brought us two extremely large coffees (in a soup bowl sized cup) and an extremely large bill to accompany it. Surely the biggest and most expensive coffee I've ever had...

My 'mistake' occurred on my second visit to a charming little restaurant not too far from the Notre Dame. After ordering a cup of tea and a crepe the waiter casually asked me whether I would like a glass of water. Although the water was clearly decantered from a large bottle in to the little bottle I received, they charged me E$4.00 (about AUD $6.60). When I queried the price they said a couple who had just left had paid the same amount. Not willing to haggle in English, and unable to speak much French I paid and though 'at least I have a tourist trap to add to my VT site!'.
Always, always, always check the price of each item you order! Leave a Comment

My Bofinger experience is probably the most disappointing of anything in Paris. I went there with three friends, all of whom spoke French. We were seated in a small, windowless room on the second floor which was crowded with other Americans ONLY. The food was mediocre, at best and while the service was formal, it was severe. I was not impressed. Read Patricia Well's review of Bofinger in "Food Lover's Guide to Paris". It hits the nail on the head.
I should have asked for a different table, which I did not. Try asking a local in the boulangerie or the patisserie where they would eat. I've gotten some great recommendations. Leave a Comment

The atmosphere and setting of the latin quarter is great - no one is going to argue with that. But the quality of food is pretty appauling. I was served up a plate of mussels that would embarrass any frenchmen.
Eat first!
Ask the locals where they go to eat, ethnic food is always cheaper and of good quality and good french food shouldn't leave you too out of pocket. See my tip on Chez Michel as a good starting point. Leave a Comment
