  • Tip Rating:
  • most tourists get trapped in the area around Place du Tertre and Pigalle in Montmarte, but there are also some popular Night Clubs, like Le Divan Du Monde

    Montmartre/Sacré Coeur: Montremartre - in the hey-days...
  • Tip Rating:
  • Montremartre - in the hey-days it used to be a popular hangout for artists of any kind. These days, however, those people selling paintings in the little square are not worth being called artists at all. Also note the souvenir shops: the ugliest among the ugly. It's behind the Sacre-Coeur: gladly give it a miss.

Montmartre/Sacré Coeur: Personally, I was not that...
  • Tip Rating:
  • Personally, I was not that enthralled with PERE LACHAISE or SACRE COEUR. I'm sure there are many whom would argue, but it's just my opinion. Pere Lachaise is a famous cemetary, having famous people like Door's Jim Morrison calling it home. (There are many non-French buried here.) If you have the time and the desire to locate your favorite dead celebrity, go here. SACRE COEUR - this too is another tourist haven, however I don't see why. The view was decent, but nothing as spectacular (nor as clean) as the one from the Eiffel Tower. If you don't have time to visit it, don't feel too bad.

  • Tip Rating:
  • Place de Tertre is a very nice place of fun to visit. But also there are so many visitors there always. Do take care of your money, handbag and babies there. If you want to have a draw, do bargin first.

Montmartre/Sacré Coeur: I would put Sacré Coeur, in...
  • Tip Rating:
  • I would put Sacré Coeur, in Montmartre, much lower on my 'must see' list. Ok, so it's interesting to look at -- begun in 1875, built in a Romanesque-Byzantine style -- but it's a pain to get to, and really it's most attractive when seen from a distance.

  • Tip Rating:
  • Be careful in the Montmartre area. While taking my nine-year-old niece into a bar to use the bathroom, we saw a drug deal going down. Use intelligence and caution.
If you want a portrait from the many artist at Sacre Coeur, negotiate the price first. One of them tried to charge me 100 dollars for a chalk charicature!

    Montmartre/Sacré Coeur: Dodgy characters
As everyone has noted try to avoid contact with the seedy looking black guys at the base of the stairs and out front of the church itself.

I couldnt beleive the police would allow them to blast gangster rap at full volume 20 feet from the entrance to the church.

Whatever you do dont let them put the string around your finger.

Montmartre/Sacré Coeur: The Peddlers of Sacre Coeur
Be careful when entering the grounds of the Sacre Coeur, there are street peddlers who will come up to you and ask you to hold out a finger, and if you do, they attach a little piece of string, rapidly do up braid, and then tie it onto your wrist....after all this, they then ask you to pay for it!! About 5 euros I believe!!

When I wandered onto the grounds, they approached me but I knew better, so I just waved him off and continued to walk on, but he followed and hasseled me, saying things like "No? Well where are you from then?" I didn`t think it was vital for him to have any information, and as I just continued to walk away, he began to holler things at me in his language.....so beware!!

Quite a scam, so just be careful and don`t let them get to you!!

    Montmartre/Sacré Coeur: Be Carefull!
First of all, if you're looking for the place where all of the artists are, it's BEHIND Sacre Couer. No one in France knew what we were talking about. Now for the trap. In front of SC there were men making bracelets. They come up, take your hand then make the bracelet then put it on you and ask for a lot of money.

Best way to get out of it. Don't give in! Tell them you'll only pay 1 Euro or less (unless your feeling really generous this is more than they're worth). Don't feel intimidated. They will surround you and cut you off from your group, just continue to be firm. If they are not happy with your offer then tell them they can take the bracelet off your wrist. Trust me, they wont. The best way to avoid this trap, tell them you are in a hurry and don't let them start.

Don't let this keep you from enjoying the area in front of SC. It was gorgeous and worth the 8 Euros I was intimidated into spending on the piece of string.
