Rio de Janeiro's Botanical Garden was created on June 13, 1808 by Dom João VI - prince regent at that time - originally for the acclimatization of spices like nutmeg, pepper and cinnamon that were imported from the Western Indies.
Only in 1822 the Garden was open for public visitation.
Here you see the most well-known symbol of the park; The Royal Palms. These trees were originally reserved for the royal family only. All palms are originated from a single tree, the Palma Mater (that was tragically destroyed by a lightning recently).
The Botanical Gardens are open everyday from 8 am to 5 pm.

The Garden has six ponds with their gorgeous species of “vitória régia”, lotus, papyrus and “ aguapé” Among them, Lago Frei Leandro (Friar Leandro’s Pond) seen here at the pic.
The gardens have several special areas featuring plants of specific Brazilian regions such as the Amazon.The greenhouses with bromeliads and orchids are very popular. There is also a sensorial garden, a Japanese garden, and many other special areas to visit. The 340-acre Botanical Garden contains more than 6,000 species of tropical and subtropical plants and trees, including 900 varieties of palms (some more than a century old) and more than 140 species of birds.
Also on the grounds are a library, a small café, and a gift shop that sells souvenirs with ecological themes (the shop is a product of the Earth Summit that was held in 1992.
Along its existence, the Gardens have been given the names of Real Horto, Real Jardim Botãnico, Jardim Botânico do Rio de Janeiro and, in 1996 they have become the Instituto de Pesquisas Jardim Botânico do Rio de Janeiro (Botanical Gardens of Rio de Janeiro Research Insitute). They have come under the protection of the Patrimônio Histórico e Artístico Nacional (National Historical and Artistic Heritage) – IPHAN - for their historical, cultural, scientific importance and for the design of their landscape. They have also been recognized internationally as a Living Museum in the area of Botany and defined by UNESCO as one of the reserves of biosphere. The Botanical Gardens are a true ecological sanctuary and one of the ten most important in the world. Besides housing the rarest species of plants from the flora of Brazil and other countries, it is also an excellent leisure option for children and adults and a delight for those who wish to contemplate nature.
Among the approximately 8200 specimens of the gardens’ live collection, the highlights are the imperial palm trees and threatened species such as “pau-brasil”, “acará amarelo” and “pau mulato”, the medicinal plots and the Japanese gardens. The orchid house is a spectacle by itself !
The Botanical Gardens are open everyday from 8 am to 5 pm. If you are going to Rio you shouldn't give it a miss! Leave a Comment

The Botanical Garden was created in 1808 to give a show of the flora of the Eastern Indias by the King D. Joao VI. The first plants came from the Mauricias Islands and many more came afterwards.
It has various species of Bromelias, Orchids, Cactus, Medicinal and Carnivorous plants. You can also go to the Garden's Library and see the many diferent collections of dried fruits, photographs and rare exotic Brazilian plants.
It's a very safe place to walk around and the tour guides are very helpful. You can book a visit by calling the number and no costs will be added. In fact if you want to visit by yourself, you still have to call the Visit Center in order to ask for permission to do so. Rio's botanical garden is perfect to take a break after hard days of visits. It is amazing to find yourself almost in the forest while you're so close from the city.
The range of giant "imperial" palm trees is beautiful and impressing. And the garden is full of lovely spots with ponds, fountains... It also tries to give a global view of Brazil's different ecosystems with for example an Amazonian part.
If you take a close look at the trees you'll also be able to see some cute monkeys ! Leave a Comment Directions: Take a bus from the beaches with written "Jardim Botanico".

As you walk through the entrance, the first thing you'll see is this: the Avenue of the Royal Palms. This 720m (800 yard) double row of 134 soaring royal palms were planted in 1842 when the garden was first opened to the public.

This garden is one of the best that I've been to and is great to wander around in as it's cooler in the shade of the tall trees and also as it's a nice quiet area to get away from the noise of the city (go on a week day and it's even quieter). I recommend coming here when the weathers not too good as there's not that much to do when it's raining in Rio.

Each of the 141 hectares of Rio's Botanical Gardens shelters outstanding examples of plantlife from Brazil and all over the world. The Imperial Palms are among its most spectacular attractions, planted in 1809 by Prince Regent D. Joao VI.
Huge trees decked with orchids contrast with giant victoria-regia, lilies, bromeliads, royal poincianas and tropical foliage, making the Botanical Gardens a favorite hideaway for nature-lovers, sweethearts and all those seeking peace and tranquillity...The gardens, which were designed at the beginning of the 19th century by order of the Prince Regent, Dom Joao VI, are one of the city's most important green areas. Within the gardens are various points of interest such as the Khulmann Museum, administration office, the original portal from the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts (transferred to this location when the Grandjean de Montigny building was demolished in the 1930's) and the old gunpowder factory. It is also worth visiting the Horto Florestal (Tree Nursery) and the Empress' former manor house (on Estrada Dona Castorina), in the adjacent surroundings. This is a large and beautiful park, home to various exotic trees and wildlife, including monkeys. There are three alleys radiating from the entrance lined with incredibly tall palm trees. The garden has wonderful landscaping and is very well maintained. Leave a Comment
